RC model airplanes - anyone into them? [Batteries showed up... f*** yeah!]

Re: RC model airplanes - anyone into them? [Package arrived today]

Update - fixed damage last night and went flying this morning in the nice, still air. Way better than having to deal with crappy gusts. I also visually trimmed the plane, and this seems to have improved its flyability. Heres the rundown:

Bit battered, had to trim nosecone base as it was rubbing slightly on fuselage

Tail broke - easy fix with tape and PVA
DSCF1012.jpg

Ring root had a small break from powerline - PVA did the trick
DSCF1014.jpg

Break formed midwing - packing tape made a good strong fix

After the repairs, a night of drying time, and visually trimming it, its flying pretty well. My skill has improved, too, and I've found using the ailerons alone to turn and correct attitude is a bit easier for a beginner (like myself) on this type of airplane. I found I was messing with throttle setting when using rudder, so am using it a bit more carefully now.

Anyway, its all going well and I'm flying with far fewer unwanted incidents. The little P-51D has stood up to a lot of abuse so far, and no doubt more to come haha. Next on the list after I master it on low-rate is to switch it over to high and try some more aerobatics. So far I can loop and roll reasonably well, but more advanced maneuvers (Immelman, Tophat etc) are beyond my grasp at the moment.

Re: RC model airplanes - anyone into them? [Flight video]

Man that thing is fast and squirly! If that is your first RC plane, I can't wait to see what you graduate to. Good flying.

This is the only video I have of me flying anything. It is a 1/10th scale of a Quicksilver ultralight that I built from a 3-view drawing the company sent me. I flew in a real one and liked it so I built a model of it. The model is made from scratch with bent aluminum tubing just like the real thing. It is by far the most detailed plane I have built. It took me almost a year to finish it (I don't have a lot of free time). I only flew it twice. It didn't fly very well (problem with the aileron mechanism).

Re: RC model airplanes - anyone into them? [Flight video]

Nice updates! You seem to be doing well getting the hang of everything. Don't give up though on the coordinated turns with the rudder! It's a great early habit to get into!

Re: RC model airplanes - anyone into them? [Flight video]

Thanks guys, good to hear some positive feedback :)

On the plane, it gets out of visual range quickly because its so small. Ended up on a neighbours roof yesterday afternoon actually. It might look squirly, but remember I've got the transmitter set to 'Low Rate' - the ailerons, rudder and elevator are all only going to 70% of maximum throw! You can also adjust the control rods on the horns to deliver more throw. Can't wait to unleash it properly once I've got a bit more experience.

boxrules - Yeah I havent given up... just simplified things for the moment. I'm still using the odd squirt of rudder into and out of turns, and for attitude/heading correction, but but am using the ailerons for the majority as I find it easier to coordinate.

flugtechnik - You should try again with better trim and no wind if you had trouble, because that model looks great! Nice flight, very unique. I'm graduating to an F6F Hellcat, only a cheap chinese brand but have spoken to owners over here and they look the goods. Link to the thing is here.

Also, if you were wondering on the camera I used for filming, I usually fly alone so used a pair of glasses with an inset 640 x 480 res digital camera. Very cheap on eBay, these are the ones.

There isn't a huge change to be had from adjusting the horns for max throw on the Parkzone UM Mustang. I've got mine maxed out and it's still fairly sedate, though entirely capable of doing anything a full scale P-51 could. I really need to try mine outside. So far I've only flow it indoors in the basketball gym at one of the local schools here.

Re: RC model airplanes - anyone into them? [Flight video]

Wingspan - Definitely try outside, its a lot of fun. You can get the thing quite far away before you start to have problems with orientation, too. On control throw, I'm not looking for a vast improvement, just everything I can get out of the model. My last flight was on hi-rate control throw and seemed quite nice to fly.

revheadgl - The large plane is definitely going to help. I'd estimate at the moment I'd only be going about 70m absolute maximum before you lose all visual orientation of the aircraft. The Parkzone F4F and P-51 are both $249 from modelflight.com, very nice planes. The combo I'm going to be running came to $220 all up, and thats with a comparatively uprated motor, two 2200mAh LiPo batteries and a proper LiPo charger. I just couldn't justify buying a $250 plane and then adding batteries etc on top of that - and a rudder servo, too, if you buy the Mustang.

Meanwhile, heres footage of the latest flight. Damn WMG disabled my audio, its 'Flying Sorcery' by Al Stewart if you wanted to look it up and run it in the background. Goes well with the video, I'd recommend it. Oh yeah, watch it on Youtube in 480p and expanded window for the best quality.

Re: RC model airplanes - anyone into them? [Flight video]

Yeah it is, behind the old orphanage there in Mundy Street. I'll probably use the sporting fields over the railway tracks in Eastgrove, much bigger and all well-kept and level, too.

I've seen some of the EDF stuff... they look right up my alley - fast and crazy haha. Was thinking something simple like a MiG 15 for a start, plus the red Chinese livery would be easy to see.

Re: RC model airplanes - anyone into them? [Flight video]

Here's a video of my friend's C-130 parachute drop. There are three transmitters used on this flight. One for aircraft flight controls, the second to which I was using controls the ramp and door opening and the ejection of the parachutists and the third controlled the camera mount yaw left and right. The camera was driven off of a servo and mounted under the #2 engine nacelle. The drop starts at 2:00.

Brilliant videos - digging the C-130 chute drop haha, not to mention everything else!

In other news, the F6F arrived yesterday:

Still waiting on the lithium polymer batteries and appropriate charger to turn up, but otherwise I'm good to go. Receiver installed and everything hooked up to it, just gotta get power in there! Meantime, the micro P-51 had a doozey of a crash and was dismantled. I've found some plans for a neat WWI-style biplane so I'll use the guts of it for that.

Re: RC model airplanes - anyone into them? [Flight video]

Sorry to hear of the Mustang's demise! There are several designs out there that utilize the electronics. :)

Re: RC model airplanes - anyone into them? [Flight video]

Boing, lovin' the new model! Let us know how it flies!

Turned the P51 into a prepainted kit hey?
Well, sort of. I was flying at a new field (off to one side of Gil Waminda) and brought her around to my left... forgetting the double-whammy of powerlines and fencing. I missed the powerlines but didn't pull up in time to avoid the top strand of the fence. 'Mayday, mayday! I'm going down!'

Busted left wing, now repaired with CA and clear tape. It'd be fine as is, but I gutted it anyway. I'd really like to make that WWI biplane, always had a thing for them - I remember making a 1/72 Sopwith Camel model out of drawing paper when I was a kid. The design calls for a 1/4" wooden dowel for the fuselage but I reckon if I can mock one up to make it look like a Sopwith or Fokker, then so much the better!

Meanwhile, thanks for the compliments on the Hellcat. Just heading out now to check the PO box for batteries/charger, and get some epoxy & a soldering iron... mine seems to have taken a walk. Probably overpowered anyway (100W). Looked up some information on the F6F and apparently it has a tendancy to be tail-heavy, so the up-sized batteries were a good call. Only other thing is that the elevators can be fragile so I'll re-tape the hinges before I fly.

Cheers guys - boingk

PS: Got my unused leave pay from the post office today - a casual $1500. Also, starting a pub job on the weekend. Things are looking up!

Re: RC model airplanes - anyone into them? [Flight video]

Ok, did you say you got a check, a job at a pub and now you are enjoying R/C flying? Nice!!!

Re: RC model airplanes - anyone into them? [Flight video]

Cheers box, yeah... not too shabby haha. The cheque didn't fund the RC gear, though - that was money I could afford to spend. The cheque is going straight to my 'Around Australia' fund!
