DTT BOTM WINNER
Hello guys!

just bought me a sweet rd 250 1 a 2 1979 bike.
i figured that i need to clean the carbs, bike has been standing for a few years.
i just worked on 4 stroke carbs, never done any 2 strokes.
so im just asking if pulling this carb apart and cleaning it will be possible for a total noob like me on 2 strokes...?
the right float seems to get stuck easily so it seems like theres a lot of dudu in there.

and if yes..how do in go about getting these carbs out....they are kinda stuck btw the left box boot and the motor boots....any experiences on that?

Remove the bolts holding air box on, it can be slid back a little
It may be easier to remove the Allen bolts on cylinder than trying to get carbs out of manifold (been such a long time I forget)
Carbs are much simpler to work on than CV, the bolt on body is to set slide height (for sync)
Make sure slides go back in correct carb, they are right and left handed, bike will 'idle' around 4K if you put them in wrong carbs (fixed a load back in the day ;D )

thank you guys for the answers!

you guys need to slow down a little bit :-)
im a little lost...
ok so:

A+C are the clamps holding the carb in the boots,so ill loosen the bolt that hold the airbox to get that thing to slide of of them.

What is B,are these the slides you are referring to?do i simply unscrew the nut und pull out the bowden?
What is D,is it the oil line for the mikuni?

When the carb is dismounted how do you guys go about cleaning and restoring them?
I would start with the float chambers working my way up....
Do you generally replace all the seals, there repair kits to buy...
which parts of the explosion image would you replace (numbers plz)?

do i reelly need to ultrasonic the carb or will simple carb cleaner work?

thanks in advance

I thought you said you'd done carbs before?
Washing them down doesn't count ::)

Part 26 is carb top, unscrew it and slide out slide ;D
Directly below top in your ABC pic is hex head bolt with Phillip's screw as well.
That's what you use for setting carb sync (and setting oil pump on some models)

seems like i didnt learn enough from the last carb time :-)

ok so unscrewing top and removing the slide will get the carb off of the bowdens, what is it with the D point?

which seals should be replaced even if in good condition?seals?

just bought me a can of carb cleaner, will it be sufficient to brush of all the dudu inside and maybe use my pressure air blower for the jets?

depending on how much dudu is in there, the best cleaning in is ultrasonic and i usually not that expensive if you them off and disassembled.

no seals or walrus in there..

Loosen screws A & C. unscrew B to remove the top and slide. Do not pull D out of the carb. Slide the super small clip down and pull the black plastic line off the nipple. Then wriggle the carbs out.

D is the oil feed.

thanks teazer.

all steps clear except point d...to dissassemble and clean the carb i need to get D out dont i?

You have to remove the black plastic oil feed hose from the oil pump but try not to pull the D nipple out of the carbs. If you look carefully at that picture, you can see the "clip" which needs to be slipped down the hose. It's not like most clips, it's more like a roll pin.

slide the metal sleeve back then use a flat screwdriver on the end of black pipe to push it off barb (be careful, it can get damaged pretty easy)
If you try and and pull on pipe it will probably break

ok i just bought a ultrasonic cleaner.what kind of fluid do you guys use to fill up the bath?

wouldnt it be purposeful to replace the black oil hoses with see trough ones,to see the oil flowing from the pump up to the carbs?

Not unless you use high temp silicon or similar.
The lines are fine as long as your not stressing them.
The cheap PVC that gets used for fuel lines doesn't last long, personally I wouldn't even consider using it on a bike. (I use either Tygon or original)
