RD350 questions

I have to rebuild my 73 RD that i bought for get this... $10, $25 when i pay my buddy back because i only had ten in my pocket but anyways. Its my first bike ive never even rode before but i love this thing. I like to think im mechanically inclined as i work on my own cars but my question is... what other parts are compatible with the RD 350? the previous owner ran it without oil back in the 80's, blew up a piston and been in his garage since. The cylinder is severely scarred and will need replaced. Im to the point of stripping the cases and know that the crankshaft isnt going to be in good shape so what internal bottom motor components are compatible? or any parts really for that matter. thanks a TON!

Crank can be rebuilt with new rods and mains. Pistons are available up to about 2mm O/S. Seals are all available. Easy motors to work on.

RD400 transmission has better ratios and drops straight in. 400 motor almost drops in but is taller (longer stroke).

Amazingly most of the parts are still available from yamaha. Although, the best deal I found on crank parts was through service honda. You'll probably want to watch ebay for a cylinder if it's scored beyond boring and for pistons as well. If I was to guess I'd say you are about to spend $700+ on engine repairs so thankfully the bike came cheap. It'll be fun as hell when its up and running again tho! Oh ya, you'll have to hit up eBay for the crank labyrinth seal as well because those aren't still available from yamaha but people are making reproductions for about $60.

I have a spare lab seal and in truth it will probably still be here long after I push up daisies. They are a not touching component and rarely show any wear even on a race bike.

So far I have not had to replace one on a whole slew of RD350/400 and TZ builds but if debris has been in there it's possible that it may need to be replaced.

can i put a sleeve in this or should i get a new cylinder? if a new cylinder what cylinders will fit off a different bike because im having a difficult time finding cylinders for a rd

That is a classic. I can't remember ever seeing a worse RD cylinder and I wrecked a few. I welded one piston to the bore after it detonated and it came out in pieces.

That one is toast. That wasn't the first word that came to mind, but this is a family show after all. Try to find a used barrle on ebay or at a wreckers. If not, the old cast in liner will have to be machined out and a replacement pressed in and then bored and honed to size.

That motor will have to be completely stripped and the crank will have to come apart. Pray that major crank parts are still OK. Cranks can be rebuilt but it's not exactly cheap. Maybe look on ebay if yours is bad. last time I owned RD400s I ended up buying spare motors and complete bikes for parts. It becomes addictive after a while.

Aren't RD cylinders available new in India? I recall something about ports being different for that market, but they were available there last time I looked.

Indeed, the Rajdoot. But ya, ports were altered due to fuel quality/quantity

This guy has a good write up on that.
