re-using old spokes and chrome wheel clean up

i just started breaking down and cleaning up a set of lace wheels for my '79 cb750 project.
i am wondering if i can re-use my old spokes? i have been able to clean up a couple of them fairly good and started thinking about using them instead of buying a new set. for $100 a set, thats money that could be used elsewhere. do they stretch over 30+ years?

also anyone have any good tips on cleaning up the chrome on the rims? i think the bike these wheels came from might have spent some time on the coast. there is some pitting and rust spots. i'd rather not have to spend the money to have them re-chromed.

Spoke refurb isn't hard, but it is very time consuming.

Wheel are a bit different. The chrome has to be removed to get a good final finish and the time and effort involved usually means you're better off buying new wheels. You can pick up a decent set of alloy wheels from MikesXS for less than it would take to get your existing ones looking as good as new.

If the budget is really tight, just brush off of the rust, polish what remains, and make do.
 
Yep, rim is a rim.. Just make sure you match the width, diameter, and spoke hole number.

Yea, true.. I was under the assumption he just needs a new hoop.. But yes, the different brakes are important too! Haha

Yeah, its the hub diameter vs. spoke angle drillings in the hoop that matter. They are drilled much steeper on a drum hoop vs. disk.
 
That's right.. I'm assuming too much. Like the hoop will be the right hole cuts(assuming it will be delivered ready to go like a buchanan rim..)

i just did a little spoke counting on the set of wheels ive already got they front is a 19" disc with 40 spokes and the rear is 18" drum with 40 spokes also.
bummed that all the wheels and spokes that are on mikexs' site are 36 spoke.

anyone know of a place that sells cheep(ish) hoops and spokes for the later cb's?
 
Buchanans is the only other place I know of.. give them a call. Other than that, keep looking on ebay.. I have a rim at home but its rusted, i dont think it has holes rusted through or anything. I dont get home from offshore till the 28th though..
 
This is an 18, but looks promising....

Cb750 and rd350 hubs are the same diameter, so you could use rd350 spokes plus 4 to make 40..
 
Cb450/500 500/550 750 used 40 spoke hoops
most all the euro wheels are 40
harley wheels are 40
Kawwheels are 40and alloy hoops were widly used

The small hondas are 36
The yamahas are 36
Suzukis are 36
Most all modern dirt bikes are 36
