Reeds for 2 stroke

I have a 1982 Yamaha RX-50. It's a YSR-50's engine in a cruiser. Handlebars? Done. Brakes? Redone. Turn signals and lights? done.

Just some cosmetic stuff (hand grips, etc.) remains, and increasing the power.

Among the list of available upgrades for the engine are boyesen reeds, carbon fibre (non-chip) reeds, a K&N Air filter, etc.

Would I have to sacrifice anything for this upgrade? Anything to watch out for in terms of engine temperature changes, shortened longevity of engine, or anything there?

The reeds and K&N will definetly perk it up.Check the jetting so you don't seize it.I bet somebody makes a nice pipe for it too.

Reeds will help but not as much as you'd think. So will the air filter but you may have to re jet the main. If you really want to wake the bike up get one of the 60cc big bore pistons and an after market expansion chamber from the YSR and it will run like a whole new bike.

SoCal is correct. Different reeds make very little difference in the real world on most bikes. They typically make a tiny change to the shape of the power curve. Bigger bore and porting and maybe a different pipe would all help.
