Registering a bike with no title in nys

Yeah he signed the bill of sale/transfer. I do have a house in vt so if that's an easier option I may do that

There is a thread on here somewhere going through the steps for titling a vehicle in vermont but I don't think you actually have to have a house there.
 
I'll look for it but I dint think so either. But it can only make it easier. Registering it is going to be harder than the whole build. :(

So I got it all figured out! Firstly I got in touch with the original owner and he seems to have no problem doing the needed paper work.....but that is what I've come to clarify. It's surprisingly easy to register a bike without a title or even a transferable registration. If you have the transferable registration well that's all your going to need along with a bill of sale. If you don't have the trans reg you going to need three additional forms.
Mv-51 mv-52b mv-82ton. Along with those three forms you need proof of vin. This can either be a pencil trace of the vin, a hard photo of the vin or take it to your local police station and they will fill out a form verifying it. Hope this helps anyone that might have the same problem I did!

you mean to tell me that in NYS if you buy a motorcycle that does not have a title, you can fill out those three forms and get one with proof of VIN? I feel like this is waayyyyyyyyy too good to be true.
 
It is to easy.
I have only ever been allowed to do that with pre titled 72 n older bikes.
Also need to know the bike has not been registered in 5 or 10 years, forget.
Any time I have done it they then hold the transferable regi go a while to give them time to research it.

Some times you just keep asking th DMV questions till you get the answer you want
 
I called the dmv yesterday and finally spoke to someone. I told them the bike was registered in ct and the year it was made it didn't need a title. He put me on hold and looked up info about motorcycle titles in ct. He then gave me those options. I'm going to call again today to speak to another person and hopefully they both have the same story. I'll let you guys know.

Just called again today and got told the same thing. Apparently it's this easy because a title I'm ct was never needed rather than having a missing title. Buy to make my life easier and avoid any hiccups when I actually walk into the dmv I'm going to get the transferable registration (going over the one he gave me it's just bikes regular registration information but the dmv said I can also title the bike with just that also) and also have him fill out the nys bill of sale along with having the ct one.

So what would stop someone from taking a bike to the DMV and claiming that it was from CT and didn't have a title? Other then the small chance that whoever had the last title would try to claim that the bike was theirs later?
 
You still need proof of ownership (registration) and a proof of purchase (bill of sale) I guess. if ct never had titles on bikes before 1981 then there's nothing nys cab do about it except make you file and pay for a title.
