Removing cover with tach gear 72 CB350

Hi Folks- The right cover that accepts the tach drive cable is leaking oil. I removed the four bolts holding it to the head and removed the lock nuts from the camshaft pins. Still, it is super tight and won't come off. Am I missing something or is it just locked from 40 yrs (perhaps) of seating. Any advice would be appreciated!

(Yes I am new to this board though I have been reading it for a while. Was a Triumph mechanic in an earlier time but haven't had a Honda twin in decades.)
 
I don't know much about the cb350, but it looks like there's five bolts holding on that part. I've attached a parts diagram. There are five bolts (#21) and five holes in the gasket.

Thanks Mate. However, there are only 4 #21 bolts. The fifth hole (I do have the new gasket) is right behind the cast tunnel for the tach cable so there is no way to get a bolt out that I can see. Bolt #22 is the lock bolt for the tach cable. The mirror points side also has only four #21 bolts, plus the two holding the points plate. Not sure why there is an extra hole in that gasket unless there is an oil passage. Thanks for the diagram though. I don't have one like that in my factory manual.

My guess is that it is just really stuck on there.

you need to make sure that the piston is at tdc comp on that side and on the other side back off the valve adjustement all the way when you pull it off you gotta be carefull dont rotate the crank or cam as you can possibly get the ttiming chain to jump a tooth
give the end of the cam on the points side a lil smack with a plastic hammer and the cam will shift sideways a tiny bit and break the gasket seal then carefully pry it off
when it comes off the rockers will fall off their shafts and stay in the head
when putting it back together remove the rocker shafts and put them in before the cover
 
addendum : back off all valve adjustement to its loosest both sides and when re assembling make sure the rocker shafts are orientaterd to their loosest
 
you dont need a torch,but it is a very tricky procedure, it needs to be done EXACTLY as i laid out or you will eff shit up
when breaking the gasket loose leave the 4 screws in but backed out 1 turn each then when you give the cam a whack on the points side it will only shift a bit and not do any harm
 
Thanks for the tip. It seems like I should probably remove the gas tank (minimum) or engine if I need to get in through the top and reseat the rockers.

you can access the rockers thru the valve lash caps in order to get them back on the rocker shaft
but yeah i would take the tank off just to allow more light on the situation if nothing else, don't pull the engine or take the top off
do you understand the procedure i outlined ?
 
I do understand, thanks. It is bringing back memories of these heads. Hopefully I will have positive news to report! I appreciate the clear instructions. No mention in the factory manual I can find.
