Removing the clutch holding nut

I'm a little new to this, so bear with me.

I have a 1983 KZ1000R2 and I'm taking apart the engine in order to have it media blasted and repainted. As I have dismounted the swingarm etc. I am having trouble locking the gears. I have searched the net and looked through my Clymer and found that one can stick a penny or a rag between the primary gear and the clutch gear.

I was planning on trying that, but where exactly do I find these gears that everybody is talking about? Do I have to open the transmission in order to find this or what? I feel like an ass :-[

I also need to disassemble the stator, I believe I can do this as well when I have locked the gears with a rag or penny?

Appreciate some input.

I assume you are locking the gears to take the stator off or something. i usually slip length of 3/8 inch poly rope into a spark plug hole. then crank till it stops. a lot easier than jamming gears.
