replacement engine bolts. use washers or not??

Most of the engine case bolts in my stainless kit came with matching flat washer. But some bolts didn't come with washers?? So should I use washers or not??

My SS bolt kit came with very few washers. I think the integrity of the bolt will be fine without a washer if it is torqued properly. It's also vital that you use something like Permatex Anti Seize to prevent galling.

While not necessary, I like the idea of putting a layer between the aluminum load bearing surface and the rotating screw. The factory let the screws contact directly, but the washers help spread the load out a little, and make it easier to remove the screws when necessary.

So washers not critical, but I like them.

yeah ile hang with that too i tend to use brass washers they give a good contrast with the stainless n black bits and they definitely help when removing bolts

It depends on the engine. On the XS650 there are specific bolts that call for copper washers on the engine side cover (the right side which houses the clutch and has oil in it).
