Replacing old regulators for use with Lith-ion batteries (74' cl360)

Was curious is anyone had any knowledge on this matter. I am at the understanding that it's important to replace some of the ancient electric parts to safely allow the use off new batteries such as a lithium-ion. I hardly know much about electronics even though sadly I took PLTW courses in high school.

Is there specific specs to what I can replace my old regulator with for a new one? Any specific suggestions?

Not so sure on any "specs" to follow. I know a lot of guys will get the Kohler or radio shack cheaper units for like 15 bucks or something... I went with bellicomoto. They have Tec units and they are very nice. They also have wire diagrams and a lot of useful information on their site you can look at and download for free.

I personally haven't used the lithium batteries yet just because I have read about some charging issues on the bikes and also different tenders or wall chargers needed. There is a couple guys on here that are very knowledgeable on this subject and I think I have heard (read) RichArd talking about this several times... Hopefully someone else can answer your question better than I have. Sorry.
 
If you run a LiFePo battery you want to make sure your charging system is 100% reliable. At least, this means replacing the old r/r with a modern version - there are several options, the kohler being a cheap and popular one - but you will also want to make sure your harness is in good shape and that you're getting good charging voltage from your stator.

Make sure to do all your testing on a standard battery - the fancy batteries don't hold up well to it.
 
On my CX500 I swapped out the old R/R with a new Mosfet unit and a new stator.............running a Ballistis Battery and dont need to be buying a new one because of old electrical system

but I already got a Shindegen Mosfet RR...............I am still going to go back and check the build thread, its just good knowledge that can be passed on
 
Thanks for link Rich, took a little bit of finding (see 'here' was more difficult to find than Hawk forums link ;D ) but, it was well worth the hunt. I now know more than I did before reading it 8)
