Restomodding a 74 CL360

Just getting started on this. Here she is on the day I got her.

Since then, I've had the tires replaced, re-installed the mirrors, got a new battery installed, and ordered up new brake and clutch cables. I'm ordering a new speedometer cable since it's missing on mine, and new pod filters. There's currently a short in the system that when I use the right turn signal, the main fuse blows, and the brake light doesn't when I pull the front brake lever, but does when I press the rear brake pedal. And she's only running on one cylinder, I suspect the right carb needs cleaning. Once I get everything functional, the modding will begin. No point pulling or installing other bits if it isn't working as is.
 
I pulled the air boxen off of both carbs, anticipating pulling them and cleaning them. I started the bike up to get the oil warmed up for a change. The oil pan bolt head seems to be stripped. I don't think the oil has ever been changed on this bike. The petcock isn't working, either. Off, On, Reserve, doesn't do anything. Yup, I turned it to Off, the bike still runs. ??? I planned on swapping the cables out for clutch and front brake tomorrow. After I get the bike into the shed, which involves getting the Magna running and out of the shed, I'll take the carbs off for cleaning, since the Scrambler is still in the driveway. And I'll be doing a complete oil change and filter clean, in the shed. I'm still wondering what the problem is with the throttle cable setup. Feh, I'm getting new ones, so they'll get swapped while I clean the carbs.

New pod filters should be waiting for me at home today, and I have an extra set of handlebars I'm going to swap out while I clean up the ones currently on there. On a side note, my 83 Magna V45 is now fully functional. I can now take the Magna from out back and bring this Scrambler back to the shed for some sheltered wrenching.
 
Pods are actually out for delivery today. Along with a lot of other stuff I ordered with expedited shipping through Amazon last week which were supposed to be here Monday. I'm never paying for expedited shipping from Amazon Associates ever again.

It hasn't really rained here in over a month, and we get rain and snow Saturday and yesterday. So the back yard is a swamp. Once the ground dries, hopefully tonight/tomorrow during the day, the Magna will be moved and the Scrambler will take its place.
 
Nice solid start there. Pods and those carbs are not happy bedfellows. The carbs can be modified by an expert to make it work with pods, but it's simpler to keep the airbox. Pods don't help performance on that bike AFAIK.
 
That bike is far too nice to butcher.
I would change tail light and indicators then just ride it
Teazer is 100% correct about 'pods' on 360's, carbs will need several mods to work properly, cheap pods are probably a waste of money as they are restrictive, you NEED K&N or Uni's
Use a 6 point socket on sump plug, 12 point rarely work
 
The pods coming in are Uni's, and I ordered a can of oil with the set. They were less expensive than finding new air filters for this bike. The current air filters are full of cat fur, they're not coming out clean even blowing compressed air out of them. I'm not a big fan of cats.

I have no intention of cutting the bike up, I'm doing more of an update. The lead-acid battery will be replaced with a lighter, Lithium battery under the seat. After I get everything working, I'm updating the ignition, R/R, and cleaning off the rust from the frame and fixing/updating anything else that needs it. I'm also going to put a skid plate on it, since Honda didn't make one.
 
One more thing. The top/right muffler is pretty much rusted out. Shields are easy to find, but the actual muffler? Ones I've found are just as bad. I've seen other builds with the shorty mufflers in place of the catalytic converter looking mufflers on there now, I might have to do that if I can't find a non-rusted out top muffler.
 
Changing silencers doesn't affect carburation too much.
You will have an issue with any aftermarket air filters though, it will not run right mid-range or top end
Stock filters are pretty expensive, blowing out the originals doesn't work too well as they are 35+ yrs old and the filter fibers will have expanded enough top restrict air flow.
Cutting old material out and gluing in sections of automotive filter is a cost effective repair that actually works
 
I managed to drain the gas tank. No rust, no crap, just gas. I swapped out the fuel line to the left cylinder for a new one. Today, I'm swapping the right cylinder's fuel line for new. I noticed something odd yesterday. Before I completely drained the tank, I pulled the fuel line off of the left cylinder's carb and started the bike up. When she started, I put my hand behind the exhaust. Cold air was being spent out of the top (right cylinder's) exhaust, but warm air was coming out of the bottom exhaust. Not sure what that's about, there shouldn't have been any gas in the left carb. I'll investigate further today.
 
The silencer has a common plenum, you will get pressure on both outlets
I haven't cut one up but there could be a cross over to extend pipe length

That's interesting. That doesn't make troubleshooting easier :o But how would that explain heat out of one muffler and cold air out of the other? Oh, I swapped the old fuel line on the other carb today. It was dry inside.
 
I don't know what the CL exhaust is like inside, just extrapolating for other Honda exhaust systems
 
Only firing on one side you mean? The other cylinder will still pump air. Unless I'm not understanding what your saying

Yup, one side firing, both cylinders pushing air. I hope it was just something blocking the fuel line on the right side cylinder. I need to find a how-to on removing carbs on this bike, I don't have any kind of manual for it. Resurrecting the Magna was easier.
 
And the new battery is dead. My charger is saying no battery attached when I hook it up. And the new pods won't fit with the stock battery in place. So, time to drain and remove the tank, pull and clean the carbs, install the new cabling, and figure out what to do next.

You can check to see if your carbs are getting gas by loosening / removing the drain screw in the bottom of the float bowl. Gas should come out when you open the screw - if not, you're not getting gas to the bowl and you need to start looking at why. PJ knows these bikes in and out and does a mod to the carbs that lets you run pods without sacrificing performance, and his price is very reasonable.
 
The drain holes in the drain screws are frequently blocked so you must remove them rather than just loosen.
It's another one of the things I check/clean/modify
