rewire ignition lock

does anyone have examples of how they re-wired an ignition to a simple on/off keyswitch? I have a 1992 CBR600F2 that Im working on, and I want to move the ignition lock from the stock location. I have seen simple keyed electric on/off switches. I want to lose the bulk of the stock unit with steering lock and replace it with something. I realize that doing so may make the bike easier to hotwire. What have people used for this type of set-up, and where did you find a decent switched lockset?
I am assuming that the stock 3-wire harness (red/red black tracer/blue orange tracer) can be "jumped" by any type of keyed switch. I dont care if I lose the PARKING lights, I just need ignition off and on. I will need to check the wiring to know which of the two wires is switched ON for normal running.
thanks for any suggestions.

You can do that but that third wire is probably for your running lights, indicators. You will still need that for sure
When you put you key into the park position it by passes the starter and depending on your system it might turn on your signals/hazards but most importantly your rear light. You might want to keep that if you are stranded on the side of a road at night.

I wouldn't bypass the third wire.

Why not pick up a simple min bike or Old Honda keyed switch from something like an XR or old CB and fit it under teh seat or wherever you want. They typically include a Park position, so you have that option.

As to the wiring, start with a good wiring diagram and you can work it out. Your F2 is way more complex than vinatge bikes, so there are a couple of complete circuits that need to be removed or worked around.

Red is live in from main fuse (probably on starter relay)
Black is live out from switch
Don't remember what orange/ blue does, probably ign to ground or ign to live, get it wrong and you'll need a new ECU

thanks guys. that is a good idea about finding a 3-position switch from an older bike. I'll check on e-bay. The type I was thinking of using has 2-wires and was not specific for a bike. maybe it isn't such a bad idea to keep the parking light function.

and regarding the electrical connections, yes, I will be consulting the wiring diagram before I hook anything up. I have heard some ignition locks have resistors in them, but from what I can tell this is just a simple 2 position switch.

Red is hot from the battery (well, solenoid). red/black is your feed out to your fuse panel, which then powers everything except the blue/orange, which powers your thermo fan.

If you just take the two reds, you'll need to get power to your fan by some other means.

Not sure about the Hondas, but the Kawa ZX6/9/12 and early R1/6 have a 100ohm resistor in the ignition block that feeds to the ECU. If this is bypassed, then the bike won't start (anti-theft device).

If your bike doesn't have this, then it's simply a matter of taking the live (red) wire on one side of a toggle switch, and all the others on the other side.

Yes. That would do it ;)

Interesting info on the resistor. Would that show up on the wiring diagram? I'm thinking not, if it's a security thing? Nothing on the cbr schematic, but that doesn't mean it's not there ;)

on the wiring diagram it is just a switch. but there may be something to the resistor idea. I have had the bike running, but now I have no spark after putting a toggle switch in line with the power and ignition wires. It may be something simple like a sidestand switch, since I took the bike down to the bare frame and then back together. I thought I had all the wiring hooked up correctly. I will double check, and then try and find the key to turn it to ON and check resistance.

Sounds like a resistor in the ignition switch - the sidestand cut-out switch shouldn't allow the motor to turn over.

There was no mention of the ignition switch resistor on the ZX9 wiring diagram either.......it just looked like a switch.......but it was there >:(
