Running on ethanol

Ralph Emerson is what I read!

That would be a killer weekend getaway spot. But no, I wouldn't want to be a 365 resident! Still have it?

I lived there for two years. I would probably still be there if I would have met the right woman.

Yeah, still have it. Go there once in a while to clean it and make sure the roof is good. Thing is, a weekend getaway for me now is always going to be on the motorcycle.

There is a creek that runs past it, and I always wanted to build a small hydroelectric generator for a little power for things like light and music. Propane works well for refrigeration. They actually still make gas refrigerators. (RV's sometimes have them.)

I can live off the grid, I proved it. Somehow, though, I think living without Internet would bother more than being off the electric grid. That cabin is remote enough that satellite would be just about the only alternative for Internet. Satellite Internet sucks, and is expensive. Cell phones don't even work where that cabin is. I have to get in my car and drive a couple miles to check for phone messages.

...The "real world" isn't going anywhere so what's the harm in trying to live apart from it for a while, especially when I have nothing tying me down...

No harm at all. Though I would suggest that the experiences of RWE were appropriate for his lifetime, not ours. An "individual" in the mid-1830's would need an entirely different skill set than an "individual" in the mid-2010's.

Consider your departure from the "real world" as an opportunity to learn the skills that will make you a better person in the 21st century, not the 19th.

Last reason to not try and make you own alcohol for fuel... ever heard of the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco Firearms and Explosives, or the state equivalents... you really don't want to have a run in with the revenuers. They were after me for the better part of the 1990s on suspicion of bootlegging. Local yokels (town cops) for suspicion of contributing to the delinquency of minors (bought a couple cases of beer, put them in an underage friend's car since I was on a CB350F at the time)...

Gasoline locally is under $3/gallon. Methanol drag racing fuel is around $10/gallon...

That's a really good point.
Not only that, highway taxes are part of fuel prices. When you use alternative fuels, (such as biodiesel, for example,) you are still supposed to pay the highway taxes. In California, they are looking at alternative vehicle taxes based on mileage because of the proliferation of electric vehicles.

If I wanted an alternative fuel vehicle, I would probably set up a wood fired steam engine to recharge batteries if water or wind power was not available. There are people out there using antique steam engines to recharge their battery banks.

Damn you ADC,
Every time I come into this thread I get confused as to why my computer starts playing strangely upbeat elevator music.

Or coal gasifiers. WW2 caused a lot of progress on coal gasification...Germany and England went into it in a big way....
