shortening kickstand

Going to cut near the foot and shorten my kickstand 1 1/2". Thats pretty much the distance betweenn middle hook and foot. Does it need some sort of brace or can I weld it up as is? I have a 240v mig so weld penetration I'm not too concerned about. Thought I'd ask first before I find my bike on its side. :P

Have you done a vector diagram of the new stance? Where will the new Center of Gravity be? First make sure that it is still on the bike side of the foot once the bike will be resting on the ground. The pressure on stand itself is designed to be straight down the shaft on these bikes, its not like a Harley or other cruiser where there is a levering or bending pressure on the rod itself. No brace for me if the C of G is right.

Hmm vector diagram, I'll have to google it. Figured I would just shorten the kickstand by how much I lowered the bike.

Just remember you can always cut more off. And that a grinder is easier than a welder.

What bike we talking? The CB's, most use similar pivot designs and are inter changeable. I needed to lengthen my CB450 stand and found that the CB750 stand is 1" longer. So before you cut check out other models of the same brand.

You figured wrong. The kickstand is at an angle, the lowering is straight down. Having said that, there is quite a bit of leeway in kickstand length, and it might work just fine shortened that amount.

I was looking at using a cb450 stand but not planning on raising my 750 ever again. Might as well shorten it then.

Yeah I never really put much thought into it. Guys are right the bike it lowered straight down where as the kick stand sits on an angle.

Going to shorten it just an "1 for now and see how the goes

I would guess that as long as the resting angle on the shortened side stand is no more than the original resting angle then the shorter stand should be stronger than it was when longer (as long as the weld is good).

As far as bracing goes, they tend to bend at the top mount / frame tab, so bracing the actual stand won't really do anything.

It's kinda suck it and see with chopping to length - start with 1/2 inch and keep going til you're happy.

Yeah would suck to shorten it too much my first cut. Right now when I lower my bike It leans past center to the opposite side of kickstand.
