Sooo close...Coil help...

Rocketeer85

Goin to be a bear, might as well be a grizzly..
After many hours of trying to figure out why the hell my wires are different from the diagram...I realize the horn and engine start button look like twins ;D . So I installed new Dyna coils, dyna s ignition, graphite wires, and new plugs. Keep in mind the bike worked fine before. So wires are hooked correctly. Head lights work (for some reason the horns not :-/). But no spark? I can feel the coils getting warm and there is 12v power going from the kill switch. Also tested ground going into the silenoid power there to. Was worried the starter button was bad, but considering the horn button is identical I tried both. Still nothing. No pop, snap, noise...nothing.

What bike exactly?

Could be a bad ground to the motor. If the coils are warming up, that means they are getting power, but they aren't getting the "signal" to release their energy.

On dyna 5ohm coils does it matter if the points are on the top or bottom? Also I guess I should ask if the 12v ignition wire connecting to the 2 coils should be on top or bottom of the coils. Also so far Ive seen 2 things that need to be grounded. One coming from the rectifier I believe, one coming from inside the motor which I think connects to the ground of the battery (not sitting in front of it at the moment sorry) But then there is another 2 wire cluster coming from inside the motor somewhere close to the kick start which contains a black ground wire and a green with yellor stripe wire. I probably should be looking these up in my diagram but not at home at the moment. I connected the black one to a ground but the green/yellow nothing yet. Any significance?

ALSO...This is one that I cannot find in the Diagram. Call me a noob. But I cant seem to figure out if it goes anywhere.

And last but not least. Is there anywhere SPECIFIC I need to ground this on the bike>?
Its coming off the main harness by the celanoid.

I want to say that the wire in the first pic (you're holding the signal relay I think?) is the ground for the condensor. How is your reg/ rect attached to the bike? It needs to be grounded to the frame.

And check out the wiring diagrams at www.oldmanhonda.com

are the coils grounded?their mounts also act as a ground.

No they don't, coils aren't grounded and they don't need to be grounded. You can unbolt your coils and let them hang in the air and they will work exactly as well as when they are bolted down.

In the stock system continious power is supplied to the coil through its primary circuit. That circuit is really just a fine wire wound many times around (but insulated from) the secondary winding and then exits to the points where it terminates to ground when the points are closed. When the points are open that power in the primary circuit causes a magnet field. The magnetic field exists until the points close, at which time it collapses. The collapse of the primary field creates the charge in the secondary circuit which terminates when the gap between the center electrode in the spark plug allows the power to jump to ground.

So the only two grounds in the system are at the points and the spark plug, nothing need be grounded at the coil and in fact if either of the circuits were grounded anywhere other than where they are the circuit would have been cut shot by the ground, hence a "short circuit".

Dyna systems* are different in this way, notice that there are only two wires that come out from the points chamber when points are in it - one runs to each coil (blue and yellow) and is just the continuation of the primary circuit. However on a Dyna system you'll notice that there are three wires, I think they are Black, White, and Red. With the Dyna systems the black and white wires go to the coils but the red wire must be powered. Its a much different system.

* By Dyna systems I mean the sensor(s) that replace the points, not the coils.

Ok so somewhat good news. I completely rewired everything grounded everything (I think) I needed to ground to the bike and installed a different ignition kill switch which is getting 12v and hooked it to the red wire from the coils. This time instead of getting nothing I get a spark from the starter solenoid.

Oh ya and what I failed to mention. Ive installed new dyna S ignition, dyna coils, new plugs, and new graphite wires. Not sure if that helps.

*UPDATE*

Ok so looking over the diagram I notice after tracing all the wires that there is no wire running from the Starter Selonoid to the starter. Unless its in a harness somewhere I cannot see, but every wire coming out of it is clearly visible. Also there are 2 terminals on top which one runs to the positive on the battery along with the switch and 12v. But the other terminal had nothing on it. Maybe something is missing?

I could be completely wrong and look like an idiot on here. But I am determined to get this bike Rebirthed. Like I said all that happens when I hit the start switch is a little pop in the magnetic starter switch.
