SPRING COMPRESSOR Anyone????

locOleoN

Is that the best you got? OK.. now my TURN...
Does anyone in the GTA have a spring compressor?
I need to compress a spring to put it into a new shock housing...

I always use a big pair of channel lock pliers (Texas tweezers) to assemble shocks. Slide the spring into where the 2 handles meet. Squeeze the pliers together, and push down on the handles with one hand, and the other hand on the closed jaws. You need someone to insert the retainer for you.

How big? I've got a pair but they're BIG - automotive sized. Way too big for when I did my Hagon shocks (I did the he-man bit and compressed the springs with my bare hands).

You can use ratcheting tie-downs or even heavy duty zip-ties.

hey Tim..yeah.. I tried using a bunch of zipties while using channel lock plyers and they still didnt compress far enough...
Would the automotive ones you have work?

I use the biggest actual chanel lock brand. I don't use the like you guys are thinking. That could hurt bad!
I assemble the spring over the shock absorber. Then in the same sort of fgashoin that you use a nut cracker,
I slide the handles that you hold, sidways into the coils of the spring right up into where the handles cross
I squeeze the pliers together, and with one hand on the handles, and the other hand on the side of the closed jaws I push the spring down. The spring cannot pop out using the pliers this way. Some one, unless your real lucky, needs to slip the retainer in for you.

Noel - what kind of shock(s) is this? Is it a big honkin mono-shock or standard rear shocks?

Its just a standard Reverse hammer Redwing shock for Hide's SR500.
Rudy picked up a brand new set with Intrudin at the Milton meet and now he is not going to use it so Hide bought it.
I was gonna put them on Hide's bike for him but i cant get them together!!

I though I could put them together using zip ties and some pressure.. MAN WAS I WRONG!!..

Ah they're crap - I'll take them off Hide's hands for $50, or whatever was paid for them, whichever is less ;)

How far do they need to be compressed for the retainers to slip into place? The quick and not so expensive option is to take them to a shop. Should take them 2 minutes.

This is the tool you want (comes in a set of two - you need to compress the springs from opposite sides).
