starter relay question

Ok this seems really simple but can't seem to get this to work. I'm trying get my power to my starter and my electrical wiring is a mess. So I'm just try to get power over to the starter. Not exactly sure how the relay works so here's what I got.

On one 0f the 2 main leads, one is pretty much directly connected to the + of the battery, getting 12v from my volt meter.

The other main lead has a heavy gage wire going to the starter and is get no power.

So now I'm left with the two wires coming out of the starter relay which is the yellow and green wire shown in this picture. Now one of these wires goes to the start button and the other is ground??? I'm thinking when it's wired right and you push the starter button, power will go to that second lead which is the one the one that goes to the starter. I keep messing around with those green and yellow wires, but can't seem to get 12v or any volts on that lead to the starter.

Helpp

Thanks

The yellow & red wire goes to starter button wire, that's actually the ground. The green & white wire goes to the black wire, which is the switched power wire.

So when the key is on, power to the black wire, to the green/white. Sound about right from the mess of a wiring that I have. I'll give that a try.

Thanks

Bike is a 80' kz750 twin. The old harness is half installed, but I'm working my way through it to build a minimum new harness. Much of it I just don't need and even what I do need is pretty worn and brittle. I've pull off all the electrical tape from the harness so I can trace every wire.
