Steering bearing heated in oven

Ive heated the steering bearing bottom race in the oven, the surface of the race turned blue?! Should i be worried? i could clean the blueish of with some paper after it was fitted on the steering stem, may it be damaged? i were not over 180c but it smelled alot in the kitchen but could it have been some oil/grease on the race that were "melted" at the procedure? by the way im using new ball steering bearings.

and i put the race in the oven before i started it. but i took it out as soon as i smelled something that was not familiar

it is def possible you alterd the properties
blue is well over 500 f :-\
is it a taperd or ball bearing ?

Its ball bearings for an sr500, talked to an engineer at work Who says it was just oxidation probably and does not harm, u need to stay at 170celsius(hardened Steel) for a certain time to loose its hardened effect

but you had it over 260c or it wouldn't have turned blue
try scratching it with a file, if it is still as hard as mosquito beaks,run it

No if u read again, i wads not over 180, and the race were in the oven from 0 degrees and i took it out before the oven reqched 180 Celsius and the blueish colour were wiped off with paper aftet it cool downed

It's generally more effective heating one part at a time. Heating for expansion freezing if you need to shrink.

Yes i heated only the bearing race and freezed the stem, what im thinking now that is probably was some kind of oil/grease coating that turned blueish, that is there to preveny rust. So i think im good to go

nothing wrong with heating the outer a bit and cooling the inner however it really isnt needed, just bang em on, no need to heat
just make sure they are going on straight,no hanging burs, use a lil lube
