Stripped Top Fork Bolt On GL1000

Ok, SO I was Chaning for oil and one side went smooth other, not so much. I saw that the allen head hole in the fork bolt / cap was about half stripped, so I PB blastered it for about 2 beers then tried to get it off, of course it wouldn't budge, stripped all the way to round, then against better judgement I tried an easy out, and it broke. What can I do? I pulled fork off bike and I can grab the lip of the bolt with Channel locks but I don't have a vice so I can;t get it with those either. I was consdering grinding the lip until flush with top of fork as I will need a replacement but I don't want to wreck the fork legs.

Thanks Swivel, I figured I would have to do that. I have however run across another problem. The bolts are discontinued so if I destroy the one in there, I am SOL for a replacement unless I can score a used one. I have yet to find one. I wonder if any of the other 37 MM honda bikes caps would work. I know a lot of them had air valves but if the threads and depth are the same or even just the threads I wouldn't care if it is a different top and I could add a spacer to correct the depth in either fork to match them up.

Thanks, found a complete set of forks for 50 shipped so emailing guy about bolts now. If they are good I will buy them as it would have been 25 just for the bolt if it was still available.

Yep, I know, I put some never sieze on the one I got off to hopefully make it come back off when seals need to be done. I almost feel like changing them now but they are not leaking at all. I found out there are some air caps from honda bikes that will fit so I may be able to get a set of something. I hope so as the bike is so close to ready for the season.

I would think a small machine shop, or a local home hobby machinist could make you one pretty cheap if all else fails.

Anything from first gen 75-79 will work as far as I know but they have been discontinued for the last 15 or so years. I am going to a bone yard tonight with plug in hand to see if something from another bike with 37 mm forks will fit. BCBarker had a set but they ended being 35mm. I also found a set of forks that need rebuilding on ebay I can get for 60 shipped so that is the route I will go if I have too.

Got forks for 20 bucks local so if all goes well the bike will be ready for riding on the weekend and the wife and I can get a ride in, Weather is supposed to be all sunny and warm which is good beacuse we have had nothing but rain fro the last week.

This happened to me last night, Maritime. How is this something that they actually put in to production?!?!? I ordered one that was cnc'd to have a 26mm cap instead of the stupid allen key. So frustrating.
