Suzuki GR650 - back to work...

Re: Suzuki GR650- DOT approved lighting

Rich, you need another Tempter about as bad as I need another GS. LOL.

Re: Suzuki GR650- DOT approved lighting

Hey....this is a bike I might actually have a chance of fitting!

Actually Doug, I think you need a GR. You said it yourself: "This makes me want a twin"!

Swagger: you never did ride the Zook when you were here, did you? You'd like it - even more so now.

So I've been riding around a good bit trying to work out the jetting and I'm getting to the point where I think I may have a fuel delivery issue. The stock jets are 137.5's and I'm up to 150 or 152.5 (cant remember off the top of my head) and the next size is coming in today. So I'm about about 6 sizes on the mains and it's still popping at WOT. Petcock filter was new when installed, stock petcock was cleaned thoroughly and is running on the "prime" position, and I've had the gas cap opened for a WOT run. The one thing I have noticed is if the petcock is set ever so slightly off "prime", it pops and sputters quickly. So I ordered a Pingel high flo unit from Z1 for a couple different reasons: I plan on putting VM carbs on and the stock petcock is vacuum activated. So either I shoe horn the diaphram open and can't turn the gas off, or run in prime all the time with no reserve setting like I'm doing now.

Re: Suzuki GR650- DOT approved lighting

you got me there. lol. your GR was a blast to ride, i'm still amazed at how far you've come from a stock Tempter.

now you have to ride my GS and see if you want an inline ;-)

Re: Suzuki GR650- DOT approved lighting

Yeah well, I was a little worried about the 175 Rich, coulda gotten stuck.....
BAHAHAHA! Whew...I need more coffee.....

Re: Suzuki GR650- killing bees and passing gas

Had to cut the grass for the first time in 3 weeks, and in my absence a nice family of wasps moved into the lilac bush. After a very short property dispute (they won) I decided to invite them over for a bonfire. Bastards.

But back to the bike. I bumped the mains up along with the idle jets and it's still popping at higher rpm's. Next week I'll be going up another size on the mains (at 155's now). Ordered a new Pingel petcock from Z1 so I know it's not a fuel delivery issue. Plus, now I actually have a on/off/reserve setting.

Re: Suzuki GR650- killing bees and passing gas

Oh, come now. I gotta a couple of guys that force solid steel to submit to their every whim, who comand the mechanical thunder and piss pure white lightening, worried about tiny insignificant bees. At least you have an effective method for dealing with the little buggers. ;)

Re: Suzuki GR650- killing bees and passing gas

Ha! If they had sent me a formal request for the lilac bush, I would have accepted. Or not.

Forgot to add this today: went out to the garage when I woke up to fiddle with the new clipons when I noticed a small puddle on the ground under the air filter. Low and behold, the petcock tube (inside the tank) was pressed against the wall, not allowing the valve to shut completely. So, drain the tank, remove the petcock, cut off a section of the tube, change the oil, etc, etc, and I'm back on 2 wheels. I filled up the tank on my way to work and reset the trip meter to 0. Gotta figure out how many miles before I hit reserve.

Re: Suzuki GR650- Viva la Tarozzi!

So I got these clip ons in the other day from FFTP- Tarozzi low-rise bars:

After trying to figure out the best possible way to mount them I finally came up with a solution. I really wanted these for the versatility: low and forward for "sporty" riding and high & rear ward for everyday cruising. Now I know its kinda tough to see with all the clutter in the picture, but the left side is mounted low and th right side is mounted high (just for reference to what I mean):

Here's a closer shot of the left side:

And the right:

Re: Suzuki GR650- Viva la Tarozzi!

I had those clip-ons on my GS450. They are very versatile and it's easy to find a good riding position with them. My only complaint is you have to tighten the hell out of the clamp bolt, and even then if I pulled on them too hard they would move.

Re: Suzuki GR650- Viva la Tarozzi!

If they move around on you after you tighten them, try some spray adhesive in the loop and re-install. The spray adhesive will usually give you enough friction to stop the movement.

Re: Suzuki GR650- Viva la Tarozzi!

Dig the cafe Rich.Did you get the carbs sorted out?Was/Is it a fuel flow issue? On some of the bigger engines, sporting CV carbs, the K&N lunch box air filter causes turbulent air flow through the carbs. This usually shows up as popping and sputtering at wide open throttle and usually in the upper rpm range.I know a lot of people, including me,have been able to tune out the problem, and get pretty smooth performance out of the K&N lunch box air filter.

Re: Suzuki GR650- Viva la Tarozzi!

Squad, you are absolutely correct about tightening them down. I was surprised how much they needed to be cranked down! And thanks Brandon! I will have to keep that in mind.

Ben, I'm still working on them for sure. Every time I bump the mains up it is an improvement, so that's my course of action for now. Everything else is good: tank vent, carb vent, fuel filter (on the Pingel valve), etc. The only thing that I haven't actually checked were the coils- but they were good last year.

Doesn't sound like a coil issue to me either.

I forgot to tell you.Dgyver that used to be on the GSTwins forum was in the process of putting a GS500 transmission in a GR650 case. Then he was going to do the GSXR head mod on it like a few have done on the GS500.He also fleetingly spoke of an over bore also. When he was done,it was going into a GS500.He also said there shouldn't no issues with revving the GR650 bottom end to 13,000 rpm .We used to hang out, but he is in a serious relationship.I think he is looking to get remarried.Last I heard,he shut the doors on his shop and hasn't opened them in 2 or3 years.I miss my bike mechanic pal. :-[ I'll try to sneak over one day and see if I can catch the shop lights on. ;)

Re: Suzuki GR650- Viva la Tarozzi!

Ya, I've read some of his posts- usually while searching for performance upgrades for the GR. I wondered what happened to him........

So I spent today just riding- wanted to figure out how many miles I get before switching to reserve. And before anybody says "drain it and measure" I say "where's the fun in that?". Filled up the tank, reset the trip meter to 0, and hit the road. The GS450 T tank holds 3.8 gallons according to the spec list and I get "about" 40 miles per gallon. So from full to bone dry is about 152 miles. At 126 miles I finally started to sputter and flipped to reserve. At 130 miles I stopped to get a full tank.......and filled it with 3.44 gallons! Which means another .36 gallons (14.4 miles) and I would be pushing it- literally.

In all fairness, I was kinda hitting the throttle hard so that probably affected my mileage.

Re: Suzuki GR650- Viva la Tarozzi!

Oh yeah- I bumped the mains up this morning to 165. That is eleven sizes over stock. Either the factory intake/exhaust is crazy restrictive, or.......well, I dunno. Because it's still popping at high rpms. So I'll be trying some bigger jets and/or UNI pods. Maybe the plastic at the back end of the K&N is reflecting the pulse in the intake.......

WOW! That some serious rejetting.Wish I could offer up something else but you've probably read my post with the link to CV carb tuning.I'll add it here for others that are watching this thread.

AWESOME timing ben2go! I am in the middle of rebuilding my 4 CV carbs. Thanks for that link!
