I've got a GS850S with that same BIG tank, in the garage waiting on me right now. This tank was going to be my first foray into hammering in some knee dents. Glad I got to see your work first :) Love the bike!

Haha, thanks guys.

Once I get the 450 standing on its own 2 wheels again, the GR is going up on the bench. I'll need to make a new home for the electrical stuff, and then I can get to work on making the seat look like something other than a pile of spare parts laying around.......

OK Rich lets solve that emblem problem . Take the tank off and bring it down to me and we can fill in where the original badges went . With that color it would be ashame to cover any of it .

Is moving the electrics as simple as just moving them, or do you need to extend the harnesses?
Wanting to move all mine up under my seat. Not afraid of cutting and splicing, just curious. ;)

Most of my wiring had been extended to get everything under the seat already. So for fitment's sake, I'll just need to figure out the mounts. In the long run, some of the wiring will actually need to be shortened......

I had a question for you regarding the VM34s you used on this bike: What did you do about the secondary air inlet ports that the GR has? I've been thinking about putting new/different carbs on my Gr, but those port thingies make me sort of confused...

I just used some plain old vacuum plugs from Auto Zone. Only problem with them is that since they are rubber, they tend to dry out and need replaced every year.

Thanks fellas! Unfortunately, not much has happened recently. I've been busy around the house, and working on the 450. It's considerably easier to just bolt a bike back together (the 450) than it is to do custom work........ Hopefully soon though!

Forgot to update this! I started removing the tray for the electrical doo-dads, and wanted to get an idea for the final shape. With no massive fiberglass ass, I need a proper rear fender, and have this one laying around (ignore the generic tail light, it's already unbolted):

Bear with me, the seat needs finished obviously, but any objections to the shape / placement of the fender?

Maybe it is the tail light throwing it off. Looks like it needs to come forward and down slightly to better mirror the shape of the wheel? Could just be the picture but it seems to be at an odd angle and kinda sitting like a dirt bike fender right now.

It does stick out a bit but his solo seat is pretty pointy too, so IMO it wouldn't look bad.

This is going to be your distance bike right? I say the fender is fine and you will be happy if it rains. Maybe do a small cowl to tie the seat into the fender like I did on the CX? You can hide a few electric bits and put a tail light in it.

I'd need to see it with the tail piece on but yeah I reckon bring it down more in line with the curve of the tyre.


It took me ages to figure out the best position for the GTR1000 front guard I put on the rear of the 450.


Take your time and fiddle with it 'til you're happy Rich.

Thanks fellas! Right now it's just balanced in that location, being pressed into the frame with an old rainsuit between it and the tire. I'll move it forward a little to expose some more of the rear tire. No worries Mike - the license plate will be hanging off the rear for rain protection.

Hopefully I'll have more progress to show by this time next week!
