Suzuki GR650 - back to work...

Re: Suzuki GR650- paint progress

Leave them there Joe, it will make Rich work harder to do that good with his paint ;D JK you have to clear over the Duplicolor, at least on the tank cause any gas and it will cloud and can even lift off. Ask me how I know. You can get those kind of results Rich, I have faith in you.

Re: Suzuki GR650- paint progress

Ha! Just kidding Joe. I can appreciate good work regardless of where it is - taking down those pics would be like censorship to me.

Thanks Mike! I'll do what I can buddy.

Re: Suzuki GR650- paint progress

Well, it's official. I hate painting. I screwed up and have orange peel in the first layer of clear coat. But with riding season getting closer, I'm gonna run with it.......it adds "character" IMO. Here's a couple shots (as always, sorry for the cell phone pics):

Re: Suzuki GR650- paint progress

Let it cure and wetsand the orange peel out then apply another coat and polish. Not ruined, just more work. Or leave it and fix it next winter ;D It looks good enough and you ride it, not stare at it in your driveway!

Re: Suzuki GR650- paint progress

Holy buckets! That thing looks amazing Rich...really, that's outstanding. I know that some people gripe about the supporting nature we've tried to build here, but it's really fitting. That just looks a treat! I liked the original paint you had but this is just so much cooler. I can't wait to see this thing with the fairing on and painted up.

Rims and goodies came, thank you sit! Love the machine plate...

Re: Suzuki GR650- paint progress

Looks good to me Rich! Nice work again ;D

Let me let you in on a little secret... I still have a little orange peel in my clear coat ;)

I do plan to fix mine eventually and it will be a simple matter of a bit more cutting before I finally put the wax on... there's 4 coats of clear on mine though so I have a little room to move.

Re: Suzuki GR650- paint progress

I think it looks great Rich!!! every car and motorcycle that rolls off the line has OP. some fine grit sand paper and buffing will take care of that. "No one" can do an OP free paint job. That's what separates factory paint from a show finish paint, is the sanding and buffing.

Re: Suzuki GR650- paint progress

Thanks fellas. I'll definitely get to removing some of the peel, i was just hoping to have less to deal with from the start........ah well.

Re: Suzuki GR650- paint progress

Looks really, really good. The clear freshened the colors up a ton--zing!

Even totall smooth paint when laid will have a very slight OP that develops as it dries. There is no getting around sanding and buffing for perfect paint. Let it cure a bit before you start that, though, so you don't embed anything in uncured paint. I usually dont use anything coarser than 1500 to start, but I like to go slow. There is nothing more rewarding than giving a final rubdown on a glassy finish! It almost makes painting fun...

Re: Suzuki GR650- paint progress

You sir, are a sad sad man! :D

I haven't really touched anything (except to place them on the frame) and work the next couple nights. So I couldn't work on them If I wanted to.

Re: Suzuki GR650- paint progress

Killer paint, Rich. As cool as the old version was, I like this even better! Can't wait to see it in the sun!

Re: Suzuki GR650- paint progress

Rich, You nailed it! What a great looking motorcycle!! Can't wait to see some summer action shots and "tales of the road"!

Re: Suzuki GR650- paint progress

Thanks guys - means a lot to me honestly. By the time I finish up for the week the paint should be cured enough that I can bolt everything down and roll the entire bike outside. That is, assuming we have some sunny days coming up.......

Re: Suzuki GR650- paint progress

Rich, I really hate to say anything critical about such a great job on the paint. Maybe its just the pictures you've got of it right now but the bottom of the seat/tail seems to be lacking a boarder or pinstripe or something, it just blurs into the rest of the bike. Maybe you wanted it to be like that and maybe it will look different outside but that's just my thoughts. Looks killer otherwise!

Re: Suzuki GR650- paint progress

You mean how the bottom edge of the seat pan is just plain black? If so, I left it like that to help blend the shape of the seat into the frame.

Re: Suzuki GR650- paint progress

Since I was working on the other GR, I rolled this one out and snapped a couple pics of it as well. I got the clip ons straightened out, headlight adjusted properly, etc, etc. Looks much better in some natural light!

I have a small issue regarding the front fender - somehow the original fender/brace got a little tweaked. Now the fiberglass fender is cocked a little sideways. New fender is in the mail though!

Re: Suzuki GR650- paint progress

Its like the perfect mash-up of 70s and 80s somehow. Thats a good thing! I love it Rich!
