Suzuki GR650 - back to work...

Re: Suzuki GR650- IT'S ALIVE!!!

Easy fix, no doubt. I was kinda bummed about it cutting into a perfect day for riding........ah well. I'll be out and about later this week.

Re: Suzuki GR650- IT'S ALIVE!!!

Great work man! Thanks for the Shorai link, BTW. Should be interesting to see how that plays out. How do you like yours so far?

Re: Suzuki GR650- IT'S ALIVE!!!

Right back at ya Beatnic. Hopefully I have the opportunity a few times this summer......

Thanks Tyler! The battery is definitely odd- sometimes I think it's not gonna turn over but it always does. I like it though! Guess I'm still getting used to its quirks.

Re: Suzuki GR650- IT'S ALIVE!!!

My Ballistic Performance battery is the same way. On cold mornings it takes a little trying before it wants to actually start the bike. I probably should have gotten the 12 cell one for my bike though.

Re: Suzuki GR650- IT'S ALIVE! Occasionally.......

Ok, not much of an update but just want to get my thoughts into text. I've been riding it as much as possible but have had constant problems with the structural integrity of the air box. So far I've had the bottom open up, then the right side (above pic), then this morning I had the left side crack open. After melting little ABS plastic braces around the edges, I bought some ABS cement (from a hardware store) and slathered it all over every seam inside the box. If that doesn't do it, I may rebuild the entire box.........except with aluminum brackets bolted to every corner.

In other news, I did get a chance to work with the jetting a little bit. I need to bump the mains up a size or two but it's nothing real bad yet. More of an experiment.......

Oh yeah - I also dropped my helmet in the garage and the mechanism for the visor busted. I trust it at low speeds, but a new lid is in the mail right now.........

Re: Suzuki GR650- IT'S ALIVE! Occasionally.......

Hey rick, I think you may be better suited by glassing one up. It's not hard.
Go to homedepot or lowes or whoever you have out there selling lumber and such, nab yourself some pink foam board wall insulation. It's cool with epoxy so no weirdness or bondo/wax needed.
Glue a few pieces together until you have a shape you like that'll suit your needs. Make it slightly undersize for your space...say 1/2" overall. three layers of cloth and epoxy then wash out the foam with gas. It'll be goopy and slimy but it'll come out.
Reinforce where you need and you're off to the races! Plus it'll be lighter than your abs piece...

Re: Suzuki GR650- IT'S ALIVE! Occasionally.......

+1!

And if you're in more of a hurry, you could simply wrap the box as-is in a layer or two of glass mat. Keeping the layers to a min will make the glass completely transparent, leaving you with a shiny, solid, same-looking air box!

Re: Suzuki GR650- IT'S ALIVE! Occasionally.......

Thanks fellas - I've put on over 100 miles since I "fixed" the air box and haven't had any problems since. I do appreciate the input though.

I'm still working on the jetting and am getting real close. The stock GS500 filter is running with 190 mains, clip in the top of the needle, and 25 pilots. I may try some larger pilots (can't remember where the mixture screw is though) and will probably move the clips down a notch.

In the meantime, here's a little video of a test ride - there is some popping every now and then from fat jets.........

Re: Suzuki GR650- another riding video

Getting the airbox/ jetting/ exhaust a little bit closer. Took this video yesterday (skip to about the 2:00 minute mark for the "fun road")

Re: Suzuki GR650- a "proper" riding video

Ok, I broke out the video editing software on my computer and came up with this:

If it takes a while to load, you might have to lower the playback resolution down from 1080p. Let me know what you guys think!

Re: Suzuki GR650- a "proper" riding video

Fun little vid, Rich! I can't wait to be back on the road again.

Re: Suzuki GR650- a "proper" riding video

Thanks fellas!

I forgot I took these and didn't post them (even after using one for my avatar......). Sorry for the dirty bike - the roads here in PA are still covered in salt, dust, and crud. And I've been riding more than I've been cleaning........

She looks awesome Rich!

That fairing suits perfectly and I love the new colour scheme.

Re: Suzuki GR650- a "proper" riding video

Big Rich,

Been a long time since I logged in here. Been spending my time working on a front brake reconditioning. (Some of us, okay, I have fairly limited mechanical skills.)

Love what you've done with the bike over the winter. Looks great, sounds great. Pretty much what anyone could ask for.

Just curious about your riding impressions with it set up the way it is now. It is so far removed from that first picture you posted in this thread. Quicker? Faster turn into the corners? Comfortable?
