Suzuki gs850 charging issues

Hi I'm new to this form I've only ever looked and have appreciated y'all's help on some repairs, I have a 1982 Suzuki gs850g and I was hoping to get some answers on charging issues. I rode it for 2 hours and then got off and it was dead, I popped the seat off to check it out and my battery positive terminal was loose and had gone crispy burn colored. Now the bike won't charge at all and I'm having to either jump or push start it, I trickle charged my battery fully and then ran it again a few times got a couple of good cranks ran great but after a few cranks it was dead again. Was hoping to get some ideas on fixing it I'm thinking new stator/voltage regulator? I have a 1979 gs750 as well wondered if I could borrow its stator/regulator and change it over.

You have probably fixed it by now, but early Suzuki 4 strokes had a bad reputation for their charging circuits. The loose terminal may have caused problems for the regulator/rectifier or for the alternator stator. Replacement parts are available, but before you start throwing cash at it, fully charge the battery and check it over the next few days to see if it holds a charge. if it does, start the bike and measure battery voltage, before you turn the ignition on, when you turn it on, and at idle. Voltage should drop slightly when the ignition is on and should come back up once it starts.

If that's good, try raising the revs. By about 3,000 rpm the voltage should be up to around 13.5 to 14.5. If not the regulator/rectifier is probably shot. If the voltage sits around 12v and slowly drops as the engine runs, it is probably the stator.
