Suzuki GSX250E carb issues

Little help please?

I have an early 80s GSX250 that I am having carby issues with.

There is a nylon hose that runs from a barb fitting on the fuel tap, across to a barb fitting off the body of the right carb. It keeps coming off because the line runs really close to the choke lever, and I keep tugging on it when I have gloves on.

I think it's some sort of vacuum line for the fuel system but I want to get rid of it.

Am I going to need to change carbs or does anyone know if there is a variant of Mikuni BS30SS that don't run this set up?

I am not entirely familiar with your model, but it sounds like it is the vacuum line for a vacuum operated fuel petcock (fancy term for your fuel shutoff valve). Changing the carbs will not remedy the problem as the petcock requires vacuum to allow fuel flow into your carb's bowls. You modify your tank to accept a simple on/off style valve, but that will require welding and fab work...not a good option.

My suggestion would be to figure out why it is pulling out and re-route the line, preferably like the factory had it. Look at parts breakdown drawings on BikeBandit or other OEM parts sources, and maybe even put a good clamp on where the hose connects to the barb fitting to ensure it stays put. That will be your cheapest, easiest fix.

Regal hit the nail square on, the hose is a necessary part of the fuel system. I would look as to how it should be properly attached, you'll find the bike runs smoother at pace too without bogging

You just helped me with two problems.

I couldn't work out why my fuel tap doesn't have an 'off' setting, only on and reserve.

And my bike bogs down at low revs.

Okay, so the problem might be the nylon hose is stretched, but can I run rubber line for a vacuum hose? Then I can clamp it better.

And thanks for your help, it's very much appreciated.

Buy some vacuum hose from an auto parts store. Make it any length you want to make it clear your choke lever.

Bogging at low revs at what throttle position? Rev's and throttle position are two different things. Likely it is in the needle setting or the actual needle in the carb (also known as slide needle or jet needle). Is the bike stock? Have you pulled the airbox off or modified it, by chance?

Positioning is a bitch on this one, the barb points at a 45 degree angle towards the choke lever, which is bad cos I am clumsy handed even when not wearing gloves.

I am just going to go rubber vacuum hose and clamp it tight.

Bogging down at anything up to about 2500rpm, I have pulled the carbs apart, cleaned them and put them back together, using a workshop manual but I am pretty much a novice at doing stuff like that.

Haven't touched the air box at all.

Some of the vacuum ports can be re-positioned on the petcock (if it has 4 screws on the vacuum backing plate). Could be that the PO might have put the plate on 180 deg out and maybe you can move it so it faces the other way (and out of the way of the choke lever).

Just be careful pulling the plate off if you try this - you don't want to rip the diaphram.

Bogging down below 2500, but at what throttle position, 1/8th, 1/2, 3/4, full, some, all? Sometimes throttle position and rpm will coincide, but not always.

Never really thought about it in terms of throttle position, but I haven't ridden the bike in ages now, and my carby issues are stopping me from finding out.

From what I remember though, it was from zero throttle up to about a half twist, it caused problems pulling away from lights.

Hey mate I have the same bike. Gsx 250 '81. I haven't had any problems with bogging down at low revs. But pretty much every other problem that you can imagine, so feel free to shoot me a message if you run into anything else. Cheers elliot.
