TESTING ENGINE FOR FIRST TIME

HI GUYS,

sorry reasonably new to this, I am trying to find out if my 1972 CB175 engine will work.
It is a restoration project I have recently bought, so far i have cleaned out the carbs, put in new spark plugs, installed a new ignition coil, new oil, fresh fuel, etc.

The Engine has not been started for awhile although has good compression, and good points. The bike does not have a wire harness. The spark plugs are new which run to the ignition coil which then the earth wire runs to the condenser then from the condenser to the points . The other wire from the ignition coil is not plugged into anything.

Will I be able to kick start the engine? I just want to see it the engine will fire even just for a few seconds, would be very appreciative for some advice!!!

Will post photos up soon!

Im basically just wanting to see if the engine will work or not... is the whole wire harness really necessary?

if it has a starter you can hook up a battery With jumper cables Negative on the engine block positive on the wire that goes into the starter and that should turn the motor over

the thing is if the wires are missing the spark plug wont spark and it wont fire ....but if the motor turns over(with the kicker), isn't seized and you know how to make a wiring harness you should be alright

use a compression gauge to be sure you have good compression

what would the most basic wire harness need in order to make the spark plugs spark? I have an old CB200 wireharness, but it has a missing ignition key. Could i strip anything off that and make something basic?

if you can Rig up something like this it could work for you ....Wiring is my weakest link but there is an entire electrical section here that is very informative and lots of people that are more than willing to help out

Thanks for the information about the wire harness. Though for now would it be possible to by pass and hook the other ignition coil wire to a positive side of a battery then earth the negative side of the battery on the engine?

You could always test your theory and see if it works....But i'd hate to hear from you tomorrow that a big spark and your tank of gas not only burned the bike down but your house too...that being said this harness is only $30 and its the first one i found might be worth getting one hooking it up and you'll be basically ready to ride

It's really simple.
Run power to the coils. Hit the starter motor with a jumper cable to spin it over. The only thing that needs power is the coils. The points function by completing the coil's connection to ground.

^ That.
Power to the coils and ground to the engine case.
Fuel, compression and spark is all that is needed. The trick is the correct amount and timing of each.
