Thread about threads oil filter and oil plug(pics included)

So Ive been restoring and TRYING to bring my bike back to at least rideable conditions(1980 GS450). Its just now finally running and I go to change the oil and filter and when I went to reinstall everything I realized not only that the oil drain plug was stripped(not too worried about that one) and that the oil filter cover bolts were pretty bad as well(the acorn nuts securing everything were all but smooth). Im gonna go to get new hardware and a new self tapping oil plug hopefully tomorrow.

I've never used a tap and die set and to be honest Im pretty over my head on this one. Would the new acorn nut be enough to cut new threads onto that bolt or is it gonna be necessary to re-cut the entire thing at a smaller diameter or what have you. When I searched I also saw mention of heli coil and timesert would either be applicable?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Sorry if I've butchered the terminology I will admit I know next to nothing about this stuff.

Whoa, ease up killer..... :)

For the drain plug, the absolute best fix is a new oil pan (and gasket). Plus, that gives you a chance to inspect / clean the screen under the oil pump.

Those stripped threads are actually on a stud. If you get 2 nuts (normal nuts, not acorn nuts) and thread both onto the clean threads. Once both nuts are threaded, try to unscrew the inside nut (closest to the motor). It will basically turn that stud into a normal bolt. Then all you need is a new stud from the hardware store.

I should add though, be delicate trying to remove the entire stud. It becomes a whole other problem if it shears off.

The news about the studs is perfect! I can get everything tomorrow! Two clarifications so I dont want to shoot myself in the next 24 hours. The stud is threaded normally not reverse? and re installation should just go opposite of install correct?

As far as the drain plug goes...I'd really rather not wait another week to get her running and registered etc. That is what I would do in a perfect world. I did go ahead and pull the oil pan since I'd already ordered the gasket for it and needed to check the screen. Had gas smell in engine and wanted to make sure I didn't find any loose bits as a result of the gas corrosion. Im trying to be as thorough as possible but not having a bike to ride is absolutely killing me :/ I will start looking around the ebay and see if I can't find a steal!

Ps I think by the end of this build Im gonna owe you a couple beers(probably more like a few cases) :D Thanks for all the input and advice!

Update: studs out thanks!

Correct about the threads - they are normal. And you're correct about installing the new stud (opposite of removal). Don't use any kind of loctite or anything on it, just in case there is a similar problem in the future. Now that I think of it, search YouTube for a video called "GS500 oil filter stud" or something. The motor is basically the same, and it's a common problem.

And no worries on the oil pan. That was more of a "best solution in the future" kind of suggestion. I understand the wanting to get it back together aspect for sure.
