threaded holes in sandblasted powdercoated painted pieces

Hi! I've got my frame about ready for powdercoating... what do I do with the threaded holes? put junk fasteners in them so they don't get opened up by the blasting or filled up by the powder coating? or does the process not really cause enough opening/closing that I need to worry about it?

Companion question... when I'm spraybombing small parts, like I'm about to do my caliper, do I put fasteners in the holes and then pull them out when the paint is dry? tacky? what?

For paint you can put and old fastener in there and remove it when the paints wet. At least I have and it always turned out well.
 
It's best to plug holes, either with old bolts and washers or silicon plugs.
Using a tap or chaser does force blasting grit into material and worst case scenario, can cause tap to jam when being removed (if it breaks, your in a world of trouble)

Yep - old bolts are the go. If you try to tap the powdered holes, you can sometimes run the tap in skew (depending on the powder thickness) and then you're up for a heli-coil :o
 
And don't screw the bolts through. If there's thread showing on both sides it's going to be a bitch to screw them out.

any good coater will plug those holes i know i had a TON of plugs in my frame when i shot my rocket frame
you can see all the plugs sticking out of it

i find that assuming professionals who charge full price and should deliver quality service can be relied on to eff up and not do anything for you. i'll put the junk fasteners in just to be safe!
 
And don't forget to tape off your motor mounts, you want them bare where they contact the engine and transmission. That tiny amount of coating can cause fitting problems, and plays hell with your lighting grounds. And will just get torn loose anyway, maybe lifting finish you did not want lifted. Found those out the hard way on a powder coated Knucklehead frame.
 
wow I have never ever heard of that, we have coated well over 75 frames from vintage to custom chopper and harley and have never been told this, hell i have build and done frame up on over 8 bikes myself that i have coated the frames on and never had any fitment issues. your ground area should always be prepped prior when hooking up your wiring but that is super easy to do, 2 mil thicknesses is typically not an issue unless it is a sleeve fit.
 
It's not uncommon for bikes to have bad grounds even from the factory. The TL1000S Suzuki had a ground issue on the subframe that left some of them stranded. I think there was a recall on them early on to put a seperate ground to the subframe.

In short, you should have seperate grounds to the engine AND frame if you are re-building an old bike to ensure you have full voltage everywhere on the bike.
 
i also always ground out the starter to the frame as well on anyting to do with a V twin custom, helps get full CCA to the starter to get that sucker turned over

The TL1000S had a LOT of issues, this was just one of them.
