Timing help......

Coast to Coast
Need some help here. This may be a simple thing and I am just plain stoooopid, but I am finally done with my 76 cb360, just got the carbs back from crazyPJ and I have everything hooked up and my bike wont startup. Just cranks and cranks til eventually it backfires.

I have the point gaps set at .014 and my issue is the left point starts to open when the rotor lines up with "F" instead of "LF". When my test light is on the left point and the rotor is lined up with "LF" the light will stay on for a whole half a turn of the rotor (does this make sence?).

Any ideas what I am missing here? How do I get the left point to do what it is doing when lining up on "F" to "LF"?

This and getting the bike registered is the last thing I need to do to get it on the road after a 6 month build. In other words......IAM ANXIOUS.......and excited to get it running.

Thanks for any help and feel free to put me in the cornor with a dunce cap if this is something dumb that I am missing. :o

Make sure your advance unit isn't put together backwards. The cam can be put on 2 ways, 180 degrees out from each other.

This is right...

I would also look at the correct sequence for TIMING the points as well as gaping them.

The way those points are typically designed is that both points gap can be set individually. In addition, the whole plate moves to set timing on the "fixed" points and the other set moves on that backing plate. Both gaps and timing need to be set.

Also check the the wires are not twisted slightly and grounding on the back plate. I had that issue and I would get the light on and stay on way past when it should and the bike wouldn't fire, I had everything set perfect but the wire was just touching the back plate and screwing the whole deal. 2 seconds of loosen, move and tighten the wire and it fired right up.

Yeah that's some good advice as well, the plate on a 360 can be rotated too much one way or the other and cause the same issue when the cover is put on. The wire end of the point grounds out on the cover.

Interesting you say that about the wire because I accidentially smashed the wire to the left point when I was putting the cover back on.

I now notice that the spark off the points is arking over to the backplate.....it that normal?

Not exactly. there should just be a slight arcing between the points. No other arc to ground. try to move the terminal/connection to create a bigger gap to ground.
