Timing light won't go off

I am trying to set my timing, but my timing light won't turn off. It just stays on no matter how far I turn the engine. Any thoughts as to why it might be doing this?

The points are suppose to be between .012 and .016 correct? I am checking the left and it looks to be set correctly, I'm not so sure I'm doing it right...

Ok, I just adjusted the points gap again and set it too wide on purpose, but the timing light still turns on and stays on. I thought that if the gap is too wide then the light wouldn't come on at all. Am I not correct in thinking that? Could I just be somehow placing my timing light in the wrong spot? I am setting the light in the same spot I normally did on my last CB350 engine. Where do y'all normally set your timing lights?

Ok my points are set where they need to be, and the light still won't turn off. What the heck could be going on?

Never mind, I figured it out. Everything was set perfectly, but the points were super dirty. I took them off, filed them, re set everything, and it started up on the 3rd kick! This is a new engine that I had not heard run before by the way.

Thank you everyone for your help!

If you are going to use the bike, get new points.....they look horrendous...they loose spring tension as well, and the rubbing block wears too....

They do look pretty bad. I cleaned them up and they should be good for a little while. I may get some new ones at the end of the summer.

And if you're changing the points, you may want to change out the advance unit springs as well, as they also lose tension over time. Preventative maintenance is your friend!

EDIT: You beat me by about 2 seconds, but you'll still probably want to update the advance springs when you go to the Pamco.
