If he has these drum brakes, grab 'em! I might be looking for a set of GT750 forks to match up with this hub, although I think I can make it work with the XS650 forks. They're both 35mm, so the Suzuki forks would fit my triple tree, but the spacing would be different. Mostly I'm concerned about the axle, but it might be the same size as the XS - will find out soon enough!

Luckily I have another set of XS650 forks laying around. I modified the ones on my bike to match the XS650 drum brake, so I'll likely sell the forks and wheel together, just keeping my triple tree.

This thing is going to be awesome. Very glad I nabbed it.

as I've been behind a guy who started blowing oil out the top end of a little Honda 360. Was a MESS, and dangerous for him as the rear wheel was entirely coated in thick black oil.



yup that was not fun,the owner of the bike over filled the oil when the bike was hot, i took off at high speed, the extra all boiled out, so don't fill oil while the bike's hot you won't have a great idea if it's over filled,also don't revved the shit out of a 360 , that bike went though,

March 25, 2010. 1091 days - 5 days short of 3 years into the project, and it's on the road!

Officially I rode the bike last week Friday, but just up and down the lane and around the block. Today was the first ride legally on the street with the bike running well enough to make it a bit of a distance reliably.

Rode it to my 40th birthday shindig put on by the local crew here at the Black Dice Cafe. Good food, awesome cakes and I got to ride my bike!

Froze my arse off. It's -1 celsius at the moment, and I just rolled in. Hands are just recovering.

The carbs need some more tuning, and I gotta adjust the valves a wee bit, etc. etc. but it's running and fun to ride.

Congrats man! The bike that spawned (in some ways) DTT is finally road worthy! I can only imagine how much this project means to you, glad to hear the good news.

I got to see it in person and its as awesome up close as in all of the pics! Congrats on finishing it Tim!

I hope you are not still out there tonight, it has to be colder than -1 by now. I just walked 4 feet to the garage and back and that was enough for me.

Congrats Tim, Your bike is an inspiration to many, specially those who own XS's like me. Thanks for the write ups and all the tips you've given me.
Too bad about the weather, here in NC was about 40 degrees F. last night. and today will be in the low 70's (yes I'm rubbing it in, LOL) ;D

Congrats Tim, Nice to see it completed, or at least ridable ;D I rode the bike to work here yesterday it was 6, today woke up and it's -4 with 2 cm of snow on the roads. I hate spring in Canada sometimes.

I'll get some more pics up later, as well as a HD vid of me riding it :)

I had the kickstarter extended by 1" to clear the brake pedal. The bottom of the L of the kicker - Adam, the guy who did all the welding on this bike over the last 3 years, cut the kicker, inserted 1" of new stock and welded it all back up, good and deep, and then ground it all nicely. Nice and smooth - almost looks factory! Will paint or chrome it (or maybe ship it to Joe for some fancy powder ;)).

Now on to getting the new front wheel sorted out and mounted for some awesome braking. I'm also picking up a few sets of jets for the Mikuni's to fine-tune things, and there are a few oil leaks to deal with.

Congrats Tim, well worth the wait. Very refreshing to see someone take their time on a project, I plan on doing the same with my CB350. Nothing seemed rushed and this shows in the end result. Well done, must be a great feeling.

You should call this beast 'The Elephant' since it took so long to be born ;D

Yeah, but more like a mosquito when you find out how long its gonna live ;) It might survive the summer - we'll see. New plans in the works.

I have an SR500 sitting gathering dust, that I picked up last fall (I think). It will probably become my cafe racer, with:

alloy tank
seat
swingarm / rear wheel / HAGON shocks
GT750 4LS front hub / Borrani rim
clipons etc.

...from this bike. Frankly it will be much closer to the original inspiration, which was the 1950's Norton Manx 500 single. I can even put a swept back header on it, although it will be off to the left of the bike, opposite the Manx.

Then... this frame/engine will get a slightly stretched swingarm, short shrouded black shocks (to minimize their appearance), a 16" spoke rear, peanut tank, girder front end with a 21" spoke / mini drum brake wheel. Straight pipes (will have them made by Dutra Customs)... it will be my bobber.

Originally I was going to make the SR more of a 'brat style' bike, and then a bobber from another XS650 engine/frame, but frankly I just don't need that many bikes in my life, and the SR is a better base for my original 3 year old dream of a lookalike Manx.

SO there you go - this bike will live in its current form only as long as it takes me to get the SR fired up and ready for the road.
