Titan 500 reborn.

Titan performance

Titan cafe racer builders.
Titan Performance is a small outfit based in the rural southeast of England.
Us limeys love a cafe racer, and they are becoming more and more popular on both sides of the Atlantic. Tim and I, have owned 500 Titans for decades...in fact 2 of our bikes have been with us since the seventies, when they were relatively new ! Turning them into cafe racers requires some special components to do a credible job....problem is....those items are now 35 years old or more, and have either disappeared, or are in tatty condition. It was this dilemma, that first prompted us to consider making these parts ourselves. We both have motor trade histories going back to the seventies, and between us, a list of verified contacts built up through years spent in the trade. We have both owned, built and rebuilt countless bikes between us over the years, so thought ourselves reasonably qualified to take the job on. We set about tracking down some basic machinery with the help of ebay, and got on with making our first sets of expansion chambers and rearsets about last february. We were pleased with the results, but the response from people at local bike gatherings was unbelievable, and we quickly realised there was a commercial market for the products we had built. We decided to go for it, and got cracking with developing various items, and fired up a web site. (www.classic2strokesuzuki.com) . It's gone from strength to strength, and we have sent 500 stuff all over the world, and in particular, to you guys in the USA, who seem to especially appreciate our work.....thanks for that guys ! In fact, one of our valued customers has a really great thread posted here on Dotheton.......check out wingspan's 500 engine rebuild story.
Aside from producing a range of cafe racer items, we are also now occupied with two cafe racer builds, one for a customer who saw our work and wanted one there and then....and the other, is our own project, which we will list here as a short story in pictures.
Hopefully this will be of interest to some of you guys, and we would more than welcome your comments and suggestions.

Turn up your volume, and see what we are about.....

Paul.

Take a look at the bike we call "Titan 1", as it was when we bought it. It's a 76 Gt500 in terrible condition. Believe it or not, we prefer to buy them like this, as it makes them cheap......and most of the parts are not needed anyway !
However, this one was particularly horrible.
Before stripping it down, we put some gas in it, and got it going, and surprise surprise, it actually ran really sweetly......
Then it's a total strip down, and prepare the frame for powder coating.....

We decided to go for the race look with this one, so we added a frame brace from just above the swing arm pivot to the frame below the fuel tank......as fitted to the TR spec race bikes of the 70's.
We also plan to do away with the side panels, which we think spoil the lines of the bike.....so the lugs and brackets that hold them on have been ground off along with any other unecessary bits. It gives a really tidy look !

Next stop...........fresh paint.

I checked out your website after wingspan had pictured your rear sets. I'm working on a t500 right now that's going to be a franken bike with an 08 gsxr front end thanks to squirelys help I just got all the parts to do it ordered last week and some serious suspension modifications among a few things. You guys have some real quality looking parts I love the rear sets. Hopefully I can be a customer one day but for now my budget comes now where close to how proud you are of your parts. You have good reason from the look of it though I look forward to seeing your new bikes and products to come.

And back from the painters.................note the rear frame members...they were cut off, tipped up, and re-attached. This way they still support the seat unit, but are tucked away out of sight.

Thanks for the kind words Bicyclebobe.........

Building a special with modern running gear is an option we have been considering. A customer of ours over here has done something similar with a 750....

What do you think of this beauty?

Hi Paul!

Glad to see you start a build thread here. I can't wait to see the two project bikes finished. Nudge Tim into giving us some more info on his bike as well!

;D

And here is another.........this one belongs to a good pal of ours, who has done remarkable things with it.
He has changed the firing order to create a "big bang" style motor, with the 2 outer cylinders firing together, and the centre one 180 degrees apart. This allows the bike to run with just 2 pipes. He reckons it's producing 125 bhp !

We are happy that he has agreed to be our tuning guru, as we are hoping to build a 500 with max power in our next project !

OH MY!!!!!!!

Excuse me, I've just had a crisis...BEAUTIFUL!!!! More info please!!!

Well before we lose the plot of this thread totally, I shall post some pictures of "Team Titan"....

1) This is the bike belonging to my business partner Tim. He bought the bike from me as a tatty 74 T500, and built it with inspiration from the, Isle of Man winning bike of 1970. This picture was taken at the Manx museum, at Douglas on the Isle of Man, during this year's TT.

2) The "old skool" naked cafe, was put together by us for our good mate P.A. It was done in a hurry to get it together in time for the TT holiday, .......hurry or not, it proved a very popular bike, and grabbed a lot of attention.

3) This one belongs to Tim's brother Jon. Tim built this for Jon, as a sort of Sheene tribute, in the Texaco Heron colours made famous by Bazza. This shot was taken at the Glen Helen Hotel, during the 2010 TT, Suzuki's 50th year of racing at the Isle of Man.

4) The last picture, is my old girl ! I have had this bike since 1978, and turned it into this cafe racer in 79. It has a lot of rare items fitted, and although we are producing much prettier replacements ourselves now, I cant bring myself to change it !

It's really good to hear your story. We (British) have contributed so much to motorcycling but it's so easy to forget since the b(w)ankers brought us to our knees and turned us into a third world nation.
Back in the day I had a cafe'd gt500 for a short while. I loved the engine characteristics, a combination of forgiving torque with a real gust when it came on song.
The frame, matched with non road legal michelin track tyres (181??) was just too flexy to cope with it all.
It's defo a bike that deserves the justice of a second life with a bit of judicious bracing.
All the best to you.

Thanks Erskine...........get yourself another one !

You're only here once mate !
Yeah, and I hope I'm only unemployed once too!
I do have to say that of all the larger capacity 2 stroke bikes I rode of that era the suzuki 500 engine was my favorite.
I rode a beamish suzuki last weekend my mate had been given :o :o :o
Lovely engine, and as for the hand built reynolds tubing frame........
Now that's a bike I'd love to cafe! ;D ;D
I got to appreciate tubing through cycling post my pyscho hormonal adolescent 'lucky to get out of it alive' era.

Really nice bikes. Especially like the aluminum tanks and seat one. My personal favorite.

Let me know when you are going to sell the aluminim oil tanks. I am very interested in that for my T250 cafe bike as I think I may go side cover less as well.

The oil tanks will be on sale shortly on the web site.

The next picture shows all of the alli bits fresh back from the polishers.....
