Someone out there with some money who 'had one of these when he was young' sort of thing. Checked the bidding, and the high bidder has 700+ positive feedback so unlikely shill bidding.
 
That is fairly crazy.
Looks like an extremely well done restoration though.
Its a shame it will probably never be ridden again though. Never even had gas in the tank.
 
The other possible ulterior motive is cheap advertising for the seller, which in this case is a dealership. They have their web address in the auction.

So they have this cool bike (which they had listed back in January as it turns out) and they put up an auction with an insane reserve price. They have some friends bid up the price, it gets noticed, goes 'viral' by getting mentioned on some of the world's most popular vintage motorcycle sites ;) and thousands of people see their information/website etc.

All for a few dollars to list it on eBay under a reserve.
 
That's one of the very first ones, they didn't get all black engine second year
Probably has chain oiler pump and oil tank under side panel (very rare)
Kawasaki offered to buy one built completely from NOS parts for around $50,000 plus a brand new GPZ1100 (for their museum) guy wouldn't part with it asit was only one in the world with zero miles
They did put the 4:4 exhaust system back into production (around $1,800.00 - 20~25 yrs ago)
Just went back and looked at all the pictures, frame 00178, engine 00151, that's a real early one
Probably looking for $40,000 or so, after all it is the bike that 'killed' the CB750 ;)
 
That's the way it goes. A couple years ago there was an article in (insert generic bike rag here) about the "sandcast CB750 guy". Basically this dude had the largest collection of first gen 750 parts in the world and made a living restoring the bikes for big money. So big in fact that (mind you, this is quite a few years ago) he mentioned his last job running somewhere in the $35k range.
 
People are all over sand casts. Just the ducktail seats go for a grand.
 
There's a guy I know... He's actually a member here, who has some interesting stuff as far as sandcasts go. Like two engines, a full exhaust that's still in the Honda packaging, a few NOS gas tanks. Funny thing is though, to him they're just bike parts. He knows the market value, just doesn't care.

About them. It's just a part.
Not to say I wouldn't sell them for a tidy profit and then buy more parts not worth quite so much haha.
 
That's crazy. Although there are a couple of older Japanese guys that tour the USA every couple years buying anything KZ900 they can find... One of my friend's sold his beat up KZ900 police bike for a whole lot more than the $400 he'd paid for it...

What good is a complete and operational bike that is priced so high that it will end up a static display somewhere? A display only piece ought to be a shined up junker with scrap engine cases. Otherwise, it's just a waste of parts.
 
Ha, I just noticed this on Kneeslider and was about to post it as well. Pretty crazy. Knew they were collectible but wow!
 
Yeah, it's a steep price, but I also think Tim's on to something with the old "I had one when I was a kid, and now I'm rich" idea.

I know the shop and have met the owner. Nice guy, involved in the local chapter of the VJMC, and his shop is full of amazing bikes (including sandcast CB750s and other Z1s). Charges an arm and a leg for work, however, although he does know what he's doing. He also does a lot of work on Harley's, charging high prices to dudes who've never turned a wrench but who want their hawg to run bitchin'.

Bottom line is that something is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it...
