It was late. I was not thinking correctly at 1:15am. After reassembly i forgot to preload the kick starter return spring. Took the case cover off, reloaded the spring, and thought to try it out before it goes back together. I completely forgot that the cover supports the rod as well. Well the picture shows what happened next.

ooog. what options are open to you? can you run it like this (i.e. did you get the bits out) with the electric start? I don't know what you had/had not done to the engine. is this the excuse you needed to find a new set of cases and do a complete and total engine rebuild from the ground up?

omg. that seriously sucks dude. Is that the crank case itself? Does this mean you have to replace the bottom end? Is there any way of welding the bit that broke off and boring out and tapping it if necessary?

I broke off the kickstart spindle spring tab on my CB350 once. Found a bottom end at a wrecker and swapped the bottom half of the crankase. The great thing about Japanese engines is that the crankcase is split horizontally and you don't need to disassemble the top end to open up the bottom end. Not as big a job as I expected.

Yeah that was a whole mess of bad news last night. I can find a lower cast for under $50 so all is not lost. i rebuilt the engine completely ad just had it back in the bike. I need to take it apart again anyway the left piston is not floating freely at all, so the electric start is SOL. Oh well life goes on.

This happened to me when I rebuilt my first engine and put new rings in it (spare engine in progress). The rings you get for stock size from Yammie are too big. I just took a file and filed em down a good bunch, put the old oil ring back in as I wasn't filing those down. I think they're the same part for stock and 1st oversize. I took QUITE a bit off the top two rings.

These engines are easy to find at the wrecker too, so I don't think you'll have any problems trying to find a bottom end. I had about 8 to pick from when I needed parts.
