Triumph dieseling. (Run on)

Hey guys, I recently bought a 77 triumph tiger 750. The engine was rebuilt and it has a about 5000 miles on it or so. It's a single carb model. It also has the later triumph electronic ignition. I rode it on the freeway for about 30 miles at speeds no greater than 65 and when I got to my destination and shut it off it diesels for a few seconds ( backwards run on) seemed a bit hot as well. Has any had this issue with a triumph twin? Any suggestions?

It's running champion N3C's. They should be fine I know the stock was N3. Not sure what the C is for.

Well I pulled the plugs to see what they looked liked and they are a nice toasty black as can be. Not wet with oil, but looks rich as hell. I guess I need to tear the carb down and look at my jetting.

I was thinking it sounded to rich, not sure that it should keep running on though, maybe check timing as well.

I have heard with a rich condition it will cause the bike to overheat and when you shut it off the residual fuel will ignite from heat and not spark causing the run on. This is the first triumph I have had with the electronic ignition. I'm not really sure how to time it. I have the factory service manual but all it talks about is points. Any body know the procedure with the factory electronic ignition?

Its usually put a timing light on it and turn the plate.

A rich condition will not generally make it run hotter, as the extra fuel cools the cylinder.
You should be looking at timing. And if it's dieseling, it needs timing taken out.

before you tear the carbs up

when the engine diesels and farts around on shut down it will not completely burn all the fuel

so it may be giving you a false reading

clean or replace the plugs and ride it as you normally would then shut it off and stall the engine so it does not diesel

pull the plugs and have a look if you are really rich or it was the "bad" shutdown

It didn't diesel on the last shutdown. I rode it about 30 miles home from where it dieseled. When I got home I turned off the fuel and let it run out what was in the fuel bowl and it shut down on its own. I think I'm going to check the timing and throw a new set off plugs in it. Take it for a good ride and then check the plugs again before I mess with the jetting.

with the points it's a more in depth proccess than that. Because you have two sets of points they need to be adjusted for each cylinder. I know that's not the case with the electronic ignition and that's why I asked. I am just not sure what the proper proccess is.

That's the beauty of electronic ignition.
