I picked this '74 TX500A for $120 off Craigslist. I pulled the motor and am in the process of stripping it down to clean up the frame.

Wow, that's a later-model (76 up) one-piece head. Someone knew what they were doing...

I am not sure what year head it is... I have the original 2 piece and it has several cracks between the valves.

This weekend I will be checking the valve gaps, put on new gasket and cover. Remount the engine in the frame and check the compression. What else should I test/check to get a complete diagnostic check?

Make sure you check tension on the balancer chain. Other than that, you seem to have everything nailed.

Yet another 500 sweet man ! Don't forget to check the oil pipe that runs from the bottom of the motor to the top . It oils the cams and bearings up top . You can find it behind the carbs in the center ! Good luck man and keep the pics coming !

Wait a minute- did the PO move the oil pressure switch into the line? That's genius! I see a breather on the right side where ther adjuster cap is, too.... Is that an oil return for a cooler? Seriously, whoever built that motor seems to be really on it....

Yeah, I am pretty sure there was an oil cooler at one time. It didn't come with the bike though...

This looks like what was there! All I need now is the oil radiator... That will probably cost an arm and a leg

Maybe if you want that exact piece, but you can get a little oil cooler from any auto parts store- you have all the hard-to-get stuff.
