Are vm30's too big for a kz400? I've seen several people with vm30s,32 and even 34s but I know 34s are much too large. Can I get some clarification - whats the difference betweens vm30s and stock kz carbs?

I just got done putting vm 32s on my 76 kz400 in the tuning stage now one things for sure pilot jet is way rich just don't expect a direct bolt on

Same here, have VM32's on a 1976 KZ400 and it will idle cold immediately, with no choke. A dead giveaway of rich condition in the pilot side. I think they came with 35's or 40's, need to be 25's or 30's on the pilots. 6DH4 needles seem OK in the richest position, and I can't figure out what to do with the main. I am having ignition issues that will not let me go past 5500rpm so until I get that sorted out, my main settings mean very little. Hope this helps.

CV carbs are usually around ~6mm larger than mechanical slide carbs so stock 34 could be replaced with 28mm and no loss of performance (and are even easier to tune than 30mm due to higher pressure differences)
