What does this noise sound like? CB125

Let me know what you think. My guess is the camchain.

Chains normally losen up and make a more slapping sound
Is the motor making metal in the oil?

I'm not sure. I'll have to drain it to make sure. Also, I'll have to double check which side the noise is coming from. If it's the right side, it may be the clutch or the oil filter assembly.

I'd stop it and investigate immediately. Something isn't right. Pull teh side covers to look for witness marks and then check the oil . It could also be a cam chain or cam bolts rubbing on the head or any number of other things.

When I spin the wheel in gear. After it starts, the noise is there even in neutral. So, maybe not gear related. I think it is something connected to the crank (oil filter, clutch). I'll check the starter spindle too.

Could be the kick starter
It sounds like its something that is spinning faster then the crank if that makes any sense

What is the history of the motor?

If it's there when the wheel is spun in neutral it's a trans issue and most likely the kickstarter pawl not being clear of the related gear.

I rebuilt the motor myself. First time doing the whole motor. I had a helluva time setting the kickstarter spindle in place while closing up the cases. I ended up bending the spring inwards more so that it would not pop out. How do I undo the kickstarter from engaging if that's the issue? I don't use the kickstarter due to the interference with the rearsets. That's why I start it by spinning the wheel. Do I just turn it forward (cw)?

IIRC, I bought the HC piston off you, Surfly. Other than this noise, it runs nice. Good power with the big valve head and big carb.

I took off the rt cover. The source of the noise was the kickstarter clip. It's circular shaped with a tang. I can see thru a 1/2" hole that it popped off its groove. The open end of the clip faces foreward. I popped part of it back and the noise went away. I have to redo it because I only put it part way on. I thought it was a spring. Thinking I fixed it, I closed it all up. I few seconds of running and it came back. Does that clip/tang fit thru the small 1/2" hole in the crankcase? I think it does so it keeps it from rotating. Now, that I know what it looks like (from the parts diagram), I think I can pop it back in. I'll try it tmrrw. Someone tell me how it's supposed to be assembled. It's part no. 28271-107-000.

I ended up just removing the clip. The clip somehow got displaced and deformed. That in turn kept the kickstarter pawl ratcheting instead of keeping it back off the gear (that was the noise). Now, of course, the kickstarter doesn't engage. I don't use it anyway. No more noise. Problem solved.

Thanks to all that helped me zoom in on the problem! Great forum!
