What kind of paint stripping do you think works the best/fastest?

Well I am one of the people that has been bothering everyone on here with some stupid questions the last couple days but the bike is 99.9% dismantled now (swingarm and fork mounts still attached to the frame)and going to start going at the old paint as I have some chips small bits of rust etc. The question I have for all of you out there is what process have you found to be the easiest way to remove paint? I have used aircraft stripper on some of the cars that I've owned and they worked pretty well but can't stand the mess/fumes. I am not opposed to going that route again but a general question, maybe you could even call it a pol,l what has worked best for you?

Do you guys sandblast at your house/shop or is it something that you usually bring to someone to get it done. I've seen some of the cheaper sandblasting machines out there that you can use at your house but skeptical of how they work. I guess the question I should have asked is how do you do paint stripping at home on the cheap.

It is cheaper, faster and cleaner to simply drop your parts off at a local industrial sandblaster. Ask your local welding shop, powdercoater or engine store for a good sandblaster. You will spend many hours using messy and smelly paint stripper, scrapping, buying gloves, brushes, wire wheel etc.

I drop off a whole bike and all its parts, pick it up in a day or two and it costs me about $100. My local guy rides motorcycles and shares my passion so he pays attention to detail and he has never lost or damaged anything.

I went the route of strippers on my first project ever. What a nightmare, I did it for about a week straight and then just ended up blasting everything. Blasting is the way to go, it gets the surface nice and clean and leaves a good finish for paint. If you already have an air compressor, build a 55 gallon sandblast cabinet:

I made two of them, one of them I made with a large back and I was even able to fit my frame in there. Northwest Tool has some sandblast gun setups, gloves, ect. I purchased gloves on ebay for$13 bones and plasma cut holes in the side, then used plastic toilet flanges to hold the gloves and make the seal. All together mine cost $70 including some media. Just don't use glass without a mask and try not to use sand. The other medias are so dangerous to your health.

After a few hours with the stripping wheel and not too much done decided to call a sandblaster in town. Should get the parts back in a couples days and for far less than I thought it would be.

See......we won't steer you wrong............at least not intentionally LOL. I just blasted the tins and wheels for our build last week, the wheels are painted and going on now. 8)
