Where do I start

I'm new to biking. Just got myself a Honda VTR250 to get through my learners on in Australia. Already looking for the next bike.

My wish list is something that goes harder than the VTR, yet has the same (or close) reliability and ease, yet has the cafe racer look.

I think I might go down the road of a W650 as I can get hold of one (relatively) new and do some cosmetics. Then take it from there if I get more into it.

Any advice would be appreciated, I've been reading heaps but getting lost because so many of the bike on here seem amazing and I don't have enough mechanical knowledge to know the even the basic differences.

I've got the rest of the year to get a plan but tell me if I'm off track and help lead me somewhere productive.

Thanks
Hugh

I should also add that the other bikes that seem to reoccur in my searches are the CB750 and XS650. I'm looking more at bigger bikes because I'm 6'3 and 90kgs and want to be able to pull my ass around town.

I would get a new Thruxton if I could afford it. :'(

Hello Mate, Good to have you aboard. any snaps of the little 250 floating around to show us?
Asto your question of what to get that is up to you there are some bikes that are easier than others to work on. My suggestion would be something with a twin or less less cylinders less headaches. personally I like the xs650 made for many years and ridden a lot down there in the aussie land.

Good luck

Well I would love to show you a photo of my bike, especially as I spent 2 hours cleaning it to a dime, but its just been raining all week and she looks a little bit dirty. But it's a standard matt black VTR250 with black wheels and a staintune exhaust. When the sun comes back out I 'll take a snap.

Thanks for the feedback. I've been looking more into the XS650 and there seems to be heaps of good support sites bases in Oz to help me out. Just got to speak to some people and find out more about handling, power, and mechanical concerns. I think keeping the cylinders down to a twin is good advice.

In the mean time just sticking my nose in around all the awesome builds going down on this site.

Pleased to meet you, i have and xs500 the one that looked almost exactly like a TX500, if you see what i mean :-\ ;D

A pleasure to hear you riding . Excellent . I'm a Thruxton guy . WHen you can get one buy one . Great bikes . If you can get an XS650 . Awesome bikes and parts are dirt cheap. And they can be a tad faster than a Thruxton . Looking forward to chatting with you.

I wish i could find a VTR250 in North America, they look a lot like Ducati bikes do. As soon as i can afford it, in a few years :'( ill get a Ducati.

This isn't mine, but it's the same. I just have the custom exhaust that gives it a rumble and a shine
