Which ingnition leads on modified electronic ignition CB175

Hello all,

I just read a post on ignition leads over at "loungin' at the club", which spoke of resistor caps?
I assume that the standard points set up on a 1970 CB175 uses these "resistor caps" at the spark plugs.
I have modified a pertronix ignitor to run electronic ignition and have a Dynatek 3 Ohm coil.

My question is can I just use any 8mm car ignition leads from coil to plugs, or do I need resistor caps to stop plugs burning out?
Also, can I just use standard spark plugs, or will they not handle the higher energy ignition system?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Cibby, I don't have an answer for this but I plan on going the same route in the future.

Just curious, have you checked on any manufacturer's sites yet?
 
No, not yet.
If I find a definitive answer, I'll let you know.

P.S. The pertronix ignitor rotor has the magnets glued and melted into it.
So if you read that its just a matter of removing a bottom retaining plate to remove 2 magnets.

Think again.

Took me an hour and a half with a stanley knife, scribe, screw driver and drill.

So far, I think I need to use suppressed leads because of the electronic module, NOT copper core leads.

Still looking into what plugs and wether or not I need "Resistor Caps".

Hmmmm, I dunno Cibby. I can email Les or Bateman but a reply might take a while. Assuming we don't get an answer today.

It's about 8:30 am here (east coast), so a lot of people are still in bed and/or just getting to work.
 
Bateman never gets back to me, so If you can get hold of him, that would be excellent.
Also there is talk of increasing plug gaps????

All this I did NOT take into consideration.

I'm in no rush, so if you actually get replies from Bateman, I would be forever in your debt if we could clear this up!!!

your ignition is designed for a VW beetle,,,,,,what wires and caps and coils are specified.......coil impedence is important....pertronic's should tell you,,,,,,,,search newtronics,pazon and bore tech,,,,,,,,this set up is cheap!!!!!!!!!

I will continue to search and see what I come up with.
I was hoping someone was already running this set up and could let me know what works best.
Bateman Racing runs this set up, but he never gets back to me, so hoping Big R can get some info outta him.

Well Cibby, I got an email from Les Baker (didn't even try Bateman, he's insanely busy). Here's what he had to say:

Hi. No, there's no "problem" with using conventional spark plugs and wires. The wires need to be non-resistor (solid metal conducter) and if you don't mind a recommendation, the NGK racing (also non-resistor) caps I sell, for a whopping $2.95ea., along with the other ignition upgrades you mention are about as good as a total-loss system is going to get. The Pertronix trigger wants a minimum of 3ohms primary resistance (the coil) and about any good coil that fits that specification will work. Should you decide to purchase this set-up from me, I'm out of NOS points plates which I install the Pertronix pick-up on, so I'd need a "donor" core from you. I can turn these around (usually) in about 48hrs. A lot of guys use 12V. (actually 11.8V) lithium ion batteries designed for RC cars and some portable power tools. These last a LONG time in total-loss duty. The hot set-up is to get two and install them with a rubber strap and quick change plug. That way you are always assured of a hot power supply. It doesn't look like he has a lot, but believe me - he has it or can get it. Give him a call (remember the time difference) or an email sometime.
