Edit *The wife is* having a kid and I cant afford to finish my bike...

Dont get me wrong, the kid is a good thing but that 2K I think I need to finish it, is much better spent else where.

Smart ass below ::)

You're pregnant? Congratulations! Your child would appreciate a motorcycle when he/she gets older, so you still have time...

you can afford to finish it... your timeline is totally screwed up though.. instead of months, you are looking at years. :D

I'm hoarding parts and projects now so I can still wrench on cool stuff when the kid/s arrive in my future.

Wife and I just had a Baby Boy. Wife says Keep the shop and the bikes we will figure out the $$. Happy wife happy life now with bikes and a shop:)
Keep the project just adjust your time line and explain the loss of $$ if you sell an unfinished project.

She isnt even asking me to sell anything, just the avalable funds for my crap are drying up. I've had my 86 Dodge 4x on jacks outside since October because every time I get ready to spend the cash for new brakes, more purtnant things pop up.

I know if I down size my collection, I can better utilise my funds but I'm having a hellova time picking.

The "Classic and Custom" buisness isnt doing so much buisness as I was hoping so the preputual money machine is stalling too.

Its not the end of the world for me by any means, just one of those things.

Hey man, Two things: 1) Congrats! and 2) DO NOT GIVE UP!

I am "in the same position"...wife is due in 5 weeks with our first child, but I've got 2 bikes in the garage, and another one due to be picked up this weekend. It /is/ doable. No, my bikes don't have huge budgets (my current project will have <$1500 when all said and done) and I shop carefully and slowly. The build is taking longer because of that, but I also have the luxury of having multiple machines, even while starting a family.

You own the bike, and I'm guessing you have all or most of the expensive bits....re-evaluate your build and see what you need now to ride this next spring, and what you can do next winter. It's not like you're making payments on a new machine that's just sitting there un-usable.

One valuable lesson I've learned is to splurge on the wife a little bit here and there... I surprised her with some stuff for the baby, so last week when I said "hey I'm gonna buy a bike from a local club member", her response was "OK cool do you need me to get the cash from the bank for you?"

FWIW, I'm not "loaded"....I do OK, but if my paycheck disappeared, I'd be on the streets in <2 months. I /have/ learned to prioritize the hobby(s) though and it's surprising what you can do with limited funds for the motorcycle.

I repeat DO NOT GIVE UP! 8) I have seen a lot of generosity among the people on this forum...if there is something that is just unobtainable...reach out. Everyone would prefer to see you have a semi-finished rideable bike than have to give up your hobby...even for a reason as good as yours.

Well, we won't revoke your man card just yet. If it makes you feel better, I didn't have a motorcycle for 30 years during those child rearing years. Unbefuckinglievable what it costs to have a kid. When our kid was about 3 years old, my wife considered buying a running RD350 for me as a Christmas present, but couldn't scrape together the $350 for it.

Now that I am older, wiser, and more solvent, I am back to fucking around with motorcycles, and people actually pay me money to work on their bikes. Wish I would have done this a long, long time ago.

My salary goes into the bank to become the families operating budget. I work on other peoples bikes and bikes for a friends shop to create my motorcycle budget. Here and there when I can I flip some cash to my wife from the shop funds so she can go treat herself. Keeps her happy. I don't make a ton of money at it but the funds that I do make keep the process rolling along. Anytime the funds dry up my friend is always ready to put me to work in his shop or drop a project off at mine. I guess I'm a really lucky guy. Down side is aside from working 50hrs a week and raising a child, being a husband, and taking care of a house, if I want to have my motorcycle fun sleep becomes optional. I get about 5 hours a night.

I have 5 kids, laid off the bikes whilst they were very young. I chose one project and packed up the good stuff into boxes in the garage, sold everything else to buy parts for the good bike in the boxes. Eventually, at about 3 years old, when they go to pre-school and go to bed early, you will have the extra hour here-and-there to spend expanding your man skills and having some VERY important 'me' time.

Go to swop meets, do odd jobs for parents or elderly neighbours to save funds for the parts, somehow you will scrape together the cash to get the parts you need. You may need to compromise on some parts.

It will come faster than you think and it is important that you remain who you are, not just 'dad'. One day you can share your skills and explain the story to your kids and they will appreciate that you 'sacrificed' something that was important to you, for them.

My kids are now aged 15 to 9 years old and think their dad is 'way cool' as he rides this old racer that he built in his garage on f-all money! Don't give up, you'll regret it and worse still resent it!

Have you ever considered donating plasma? The money earned weekly from that can be your bike/project $$$. If you are making it with what you have now financially, then this would be a bonus for you. And depending on where you go, you could be in and out in an hr and half tops. I donate for the extra cash, but for me, it's so I can make it to work etc. But, like everyone has said, don't give up. It'll just take a bit longer. I didn't get on a bike till I was 34, and I'm turning 36 in April.

She got an 06 650R Ninja and brand new .308 Savage this year. Shes taken care of.

Oh, I think your serious about the plasma thing... We dont get money for that in Canada, just a thank you and a doughnut when you leave.

It's not all that bad man. Luckily I managed to get my 550 built up before our son was born. I am rebuilding it this winter so it won't be as costly as starting a new project. I am trying to get a bunch of riding in this year since #2 will most likely be here next year. We are on a tight budget but make it work.

Dude it's not all that bad . In the beginning diapers and things will eat you up but you adjust . When they are new they sleep alot so you can grab a little time here and there and before you know it you aint allowed in the garage without your new shadow behind you . All 3 of mine were like that . My Son had his own toolbox at 5 , My oldest Daughterjust wanted to hang with Dad and my 6 year old Daughter has had here own tool bench since she was 3 . Enjoy the time with them and dont wish it to pass quickly you will regret it . Sometimes they are a pain in the ass but I wouldnt change anything abotu them .

Ive got one of these, not mine but same gun. Later that day I went back and got her .308, I know how the game works.

My daughter is the same way. When ever I would be working on my bike, she would pretend to work on hers. Greatest thing in the world. Now, she is totally into motorcycles and says she wants a Harley. LOL I don't own a hog.

Honestly, I don't know where the hell you guys find the time moreso than the cash. By the time I get home, make dinner, kids homework, baths and bed, it's nearly 10 PM and I find myself to tired and not enough time to get anything worthwhile accomplished. I've had parts sitting on my workbench for two months waiting for me to find the time. I do find that at least once a month I take a day off work so I can have the garage to myself for an entire 8 hours. Not enough, but at least it's something. Oh, and I have 2 and 9 years old daughters who could care less about bikes unless they have One Direction or Yo Gabba Gabba painted on it.
