XS650 carbs leak

I can't quite figure this out.

Have an XS650 with BS38s. I rebuilt them witha kit from Mikes XS. New gasket, float valve, jets, plungers ect. Float height set to 25mm as per the Clymers.

A couple of weeks ago when I tried them out gas came pouring out of the airfilter on the right-hand side. When I shut off the petcock on that side, fuel kept pouring out, probably still pouring in from the fuel line between the carbs. I changed the float and put back the stock float valve on the left carb. Now when I turn the gas on, gas comes pouring out of the right side carb.

The two carbs are linked with a fuel line, is there something I'm missing?

Mangtang, did you get this figured out? I hate to see an unanswered question in this section.

Did gas really come out of the air filter or was that a typo? Only thing I can think of is the usual - faulty float bowel gaskets, cracked overflow tube, etc.

I had this happen a couple of weeks ago to my XS650. Replaced floats and carefully set the float hieght , and it stopped.

yea, I have the 38's on my 75.. setting the float level is critical. I have bought a NOS rebuilt kit from yamaha.. it came with a guage to set the correct float level.

I would also suggest that you go to the XS650 Garage forum and download or print the carb guide. I printed it out when I got my first XS650 and keep it with my manual. It's the single best piece of info I've ever gotten on the the XS650 carbs.

Thanks for the help everyone.

I came up on that guide as well, it's great. It mentions that the two bowls are linked, so if one is getting too much gas, either carb may get flooded.

I ordered a new float for the right side, I'll let you guys know.

Must have had a bad float, seems GTG now.
