XS650 Electrical Solutions

I picked up a 1984 XS650 a couple months ago and I'm starting to get it ready for spring. I know it has a charging problem and I've read the electrical is the biggest weakness on these bikes. I've been doing some research on kits and different solutions to this problem. Seems like there's a lot of choices out there, I just wanted to know people's experience with fixing this problem. My goal is to fix the charging problem and anything else that might fail so I don't have to worry about it again.

Or is there a cheaper way, I just don't want to get stranded because of an electrical problem

I wouldn't spend the money unless you're actually having a problem, but there is this kit without the electronic ignition:

The PMA only improves the charging system and allows you to run without a battery in theory. All you need to do is check the resistance on the rotor, between the two copper rings on it. I think it should be in the 4-5 ohm range. If it's less, get another rotor. Some fresh brushes and you'll be fine.

For improved reliability I'd consider a Pamco electronic ignition, to eliminate points/condensers. Not a ton of money and easy to install. Buy direct from Pete Pamco. www.yamahaxs650.com

Skip the PMA. I've been running my XS for years without one. I had one bad rotor and replaced it with a used one that tested good and haven't had a problem since.
 
Awesome, thanks for the info! I'm planning to be on the road with this bike for two weeks next summer, any other preventative maintenance I should take care of ? I'm planning on changing the wheel bearings, adjust valves, filters, and getting a bigger rear sprocket for the highway.
