xs850 Carb replacement.

Kinda new here. I am now with bike, without wife and looking at plenty of free time and a need for transportation.

I recently picked up a 1980 xs 850 for $300. It has carb issues. The issues turned out to be a busted float support. The P/O looks to have used epoxy to try and fix it... anyway. I need to find a suitable solution. Preferably just replacement, unless I should just take this to a shop, I'm not really a Carb Guy.

I'm cool with OEM, used, trade or aftermarket. I'm just working within a tight budget (Divorce is currently in process).

I'd be happy for any and all advice. Even if it's that I need to move this thread to a different area.

With a fat budget , the obvious solution is a set of slide type VM Mikunis, but they are not cheap and neither is getting them jetted.

With the sort of budget I usually have to work with - zero or less - the solution is to strip and clean those carbs and either grab a replacement for the broken post body or look into repairing that post. Randaak used to have a post repair kit for Keihin carbs IIRC and that may give you some ideas on how to do it.

Or search for XS triple threads here and see if one of the builders has a spare carb/body they can let you have cheap.

I've checked ebay and the like for a body replacement and am coming up empty. I'll look into the threads you suggested.

Are those Hitachi carbs by any chance?

I don't have time to look it up, but on this site somewhere is a tutorial on how to fix that with JB weld. It takes a little grinding and work, but didn't look all that difficult. Hitachi's.... With a lot of work, these can be decent carb's, but most guys who have them, make the Triumph swap. There is a little alignment work to get them on, but it's supposed to be a far superior set up. They also have Mukuni's (some came with them) which are easier to work on. I don't know what the p.o. was thinking doing this to a carb. It could be fixed, but it will take a steady hand. You can buy stock, square it off, drill it and JB weld it to the carb. I've seen it done and had to do it myself. It actually worked, but my friends thought I was nuts doing it... I talked to the new owner, and he's ridden the bike from California to Boston without an issue...

Check out the triples site- all of the info on carb swaps is there. Most go to the Mikunis found on the 750's. Two versions available the newer mid years being favored.
