Re: Tim's SR500 - June 2013 - tank is mounted!

Yeah I'd sure like to see this one done =)

Didn't make the Freedom Show, but pushing hard on the bike.

Barber it is then ;D

DON'T JINX IT! Maybe - just maybe. Picked up the cylinder and head today, so with luck I'll slap the engine together and she'll fire right up. The VM36 is ready and waiting all properly jetted and I've seen the spark plug spark when we kicked it over. So.... should go KABOOM at least once.

Holy Shit Tim,
Didn't realize you'd been working on the bike for almost 5 years... about the same time as I've been doing the Dad'n'Daughter Baby Tracker.
Gotta admit, using some "real" dirt track stuff like the rims you got from me gives the bike a certain "panache" that most other builds won't ever have. Love the rear disc and if I had the bucks, I'd like to do something similar with the Baby, but I don't.
You should try the alloy side panels / # plates again and see what you think - but ovals at the back this time s'il vous plait.
Still have an XR750 tank around someplace if you want to embrace "the dark side"...
Pat
PS. We really have to get you to a practice night sometime so you can "just turn left".

Pat - scroll up and take a closer look :)

Engine rebuild done. Fiddle with a few things tomorrow and slap it back in the frame.

Nice motor work.
The alloy # plate looks great and a is neat way to hide the rear light and provide a spot to hang some of the electrical components.
Just a question though; on my Honda, the rectifier has to be grounded to the frame - does the Yamaha black box have the same requirement?
Pat

There is a 2 inch wide strip of steel I welded onto the frame that the regulator and CDI are bolted to. The number plate is bolted to it as well, and there's a bracket from the top shock mount to keep the plate stiff and hang the tail light on.

So the plate isn't supporting anything and everything is bolted to the frame directly.

S'all good :) Going to tidy it up a bit today, put the toggle switch on to ditch the ignition switch, maybe even put a horn on. No gauges on this one.

After a careful perusal of the photos AND 2 cups of Joe, it becomes clear. Good idea - cleans up the bits really well.
But in ON, doesn't no horn + no gauges = no safety certificate?
Pat

That would be a problem for sure, if it wasn't already titled as 'fit' in my name 5 years ago :) Just need insurance and I get my plates.

Oh, and it actually does have a horn (loud one at that) and I'll probably fit turn signals over the winter along with a mirror. Might use an old Garmin or iPhone as a GPS speedo for gauges, if I get particular. But really, this is an around the city sort of bike, not a interstate cruiser, so a speedo seems like a waste of time. Could bolt one on with no cable I suppose.

This is what I'm doing with the CB7fitty- a Ram mount to the handlebar and good to go. Lifeproof makes a waterproof case (Nuud) that's no bigger than a regular iPhone case.

Ahhhhhh, modification after a fit cert. Sounds like a couple of my bikes and certainly it easiest way to go, here in ON.
Keep at it.

Seat pan, tank, fuel line, some zip-ties (black, ran out of green ones rebuilding my motor)...
