Re: Tim's SR500 - Roller!

Oh and yeah, my garage is a disaster. Broke down my 46 year old Honda CA95 last night which resulted in an explosion of leaves, debris, tools, sanity all over the shop. Will sort things out over the next couple of days.

Need to swap in the proper tapered bearings onto the stem to make it fit right, bolt on the shocks and toss the kickstand back on so it can stand on its own till I'm ready for it.

The CA95's frame etc. is going off for paint tomorrow and I need to rebuild it's engine which you can see lurking in the background. That's for the wife. Then maybe I'll wrap this one up a bit more so I can slide it again off to the side and start working on the long awaited Voodoo Vintage rigid XS650 project.

Re: Tim's SR500 - Roller!

That is one awesome bike man. I want an SR500 so bad I can't stand it, but they are unobtainium around here. Such a bummer! I love the heck outta this one though! Great job!

Re: Tim's SR500 - Roller!

Nice, the stable is going to be well rounded out when all 3 bikes are done plus the beemer! You are almost at a different bike everyday of the week!

Re: Tim's SR500 - Roller!

Ha! 4 + the Beemer

1972 Yamaha XS650 Cafe
1978 Yamaha SR500 'thing'
1966 Honda CA95 restoration
1975 BMW R75 survivor
2012 Voodoo Vintage MK4

Just gotta get rid of the wife's 2001 49cc Vino scooter once she starts riding the CA95, but it is kinda handy to boot up to the 7-11 with or up to Studio Cycle for a jug of oil.

Also have a 1971 Motobecane moped lurking in my basement that I was given by the original owner. It's for my 10 year old daughter, so I've got 6 years for that one.

Re: Tim's SR500 - Roller!

Ha I didn't count your wifes bikes but I guess you can ride them too! I only have 4 the 450, GL and a 50cc dirtbike and DR80 2 stroke projects. My son has started working on the 50 so I have to get my part done. He is basically cleaning and i will do the motor work etc.

Re: Tim's SR500 - Roller!

SRX has totally different frame etc. I believe. I looked at one once and it has a more modern alloy frame and swinger, I didn't know how rare an SRX was at the time and didn't jump on it. I should have because I have not seen another for sale since.

Sorry, but definitely "worse" to me - bike looked way better with the SR spaghetti forks!

Good luck
Sven

Re: Tim's SR500 - Roller!

Yup - I'm on the fence as to which looks better, but I'm into it now. If I ever chose with the axle done I could swap it over to my XS650 and put the Suzuki 4LS hub on it easily enough, but for the moment it's staying on the SR. I think once it's all put together it will balance out well.

Re: Tim's SR500 - Roller!

Just browsing through your thread, and i'm curious about your rear wheel. I know you had a bunch of custom work done on the hub, but what i'm unsure of is if it's got a cush drive or not?

Re: Tim's SR500 - Roller!

Havent had a chance to check this one out in awhile. Very cool Tim. That bike is just about perfect already.

Wheels are ready, just need new bearings (different size axles). Honda CB hubs, turned nice and smooth with Buchanan spokes and an Akront front, SUN rear rim set from an old dirt tracker (I left the dirt on the rims). Shinko 705 enduro tires, and voila - awesomeness.

photo1.jpg

could you please post(or e-mail/PM me) the actual width of those tires?...are they 4"????
what rim widths did you use?...those are the 110/80-19" Q sized tires?...is the rear on an 18" rim?(120/80-18" H speed 705 tire?)
...looking desperately for something to fit a 1971 CL350 dirt-tracker/cafe-racer project

what about the "Q" 99mph speed rating...will they do the ton?

The wheels are both 19". WM4.5 rear, WM2 front.

Tires are Shinko 705's. 110/80-19 both ends.

Hubs are both front CB450 hubs. I have some serious adapter plates and a custom sprocket for the rear, which will sit on 3 bearings :) Gotta bolt it together so you can see how insane it's gonna look.

WM2 works out to be 1.85 on a 19" wheel, WM4.5 is 2.75

Re: Tim's SR500 - Roller!

oh, I just realized that he might have used the "H" speed rated radial 110/80-19" 705 tires
http://www.bikebandit.com/shinko-705-motorcycle-tire
...vs the lower priced "Q" speed rated Bias Ply 110/80-19" they also sell

I might have to give up on the idea to use those 705 tires on my stock forks/rim of my 1971 CL350
...seems to do it in any way worth while and even functional I'd want to swap to a different front-end and wheel combo...which then I could go with any tire I wanted...as I'm not set on those tires, just thought that maybe possibly they could squeeze between my forks/fender and on the stock rims

-unless anyone does think they are able to mount on a stock CB/CL350 rim and will clear 4" wide ?

Re: Tim's SR500 - Roller!

UPDATE!

Tank is mounted :) Having a welder in my garage is beyond awesome. And loosely fitted the handle bar risers I picked up. They're for 1" bars so I need to shim them but they were perfect and cheap so it's worth it.

The MikesXS front tank bumpers fit the SR500's XT500 tank mounts that go unused normally on the SR version (I think). I got some 1 5/8" ID exhaust pipe and cut 2 C sections out, tacked them to the tunnel of the Bridgestone tank. Welded a plate across the frame where the ass end of the tank sits, drilled a couple holes, used a couple shock bushings and voila, the tank is bolted down, fully rubber mounted and is solid as a rock :)

Just needs a petcock and some Metal Rescue.
