Been Around the Block
DTT BOTM WINNER
Hi all welcome to my first post.
I'll start with a bit of background, I live in Australia and have bought a CJ250T in non running condition to do up as a cafe racer. I have got the engine running (bent valve), bought 33mm tarozzi clip ons and universal rearsets, am half way through making a seat for it, as well as grafting a ducati rear tyre hugging guard to fit the massive 110 rubber lol.

Here are some pics...

Re: CJ250T - Aussie Cafe Racer - First time Builder...

Hey, haven't updated for a while, silly season is upon us...
All I have done lately is mocked up the front end so I can work on rearset positioning.
Mirrors and grips look the goods...
Going to attempt to get a few more things done today but I'll leave some pics of the little amount I did yesterday...

Re: CJ250T - Aussie Cafe Racer - First time Builder...

What are you going to do to fix those dents in the tank? bondo over a certain height cracks :p

Re: CJ250T - Aussie Cafe Racer - First time Builder...

They were bondo'd when I got it...

I have no intentions of painting it myself... hopefully I can find someone capable of fixing!

Re: CJ250T - Aussie Cafe Racer - First time Builder...

Man, you can fab that awesome seat I'm pretty sure you can handle the paint and body work on this thing! Looks great!

Re: CJ250T - Aussie Cafe Racer - First time Builder...

try filling the tank with water and putting it in your freezer over night.....you might have to do it a few times but ive heard success stories.

Re: CJ250T - Aussie Cafe Racer - First time Builder...

Not sure it'll fit in the freezer! I'll have a crack at the dints , but don't know how i'll go! Wish me luck...

take the petcock off, the gas cap off, and put the exhaust from your car into the gas cap hole start the car and let it idle for a half hour.....this gets rid of all gas fumes and dries out what gas was there. Then you can weld some studs onto the tank and either use a slide hammer or hold onto the stud quoth something while tapping around it with a hammer after heating it with a torch to help shrink the metal.

Re: CJ250T - Aussie Cafe Racer - First time Builder...

To be honest I'm thinkin i'll just pay someone... Professional paint seriously can't be beat...

Re: CJ250T - Aussie Cafe Racer - First time Builder...

You're right. It just costs so f@%#ing much.

Re: CJ250T - Aussie Cafe Racer - First time Builder...

Or I could pay 900bux for an aluminium polished tank... hmm hang on...

OK OK I'll give painting the tank a run... but I'm definately not promising anything!!

Spray can? That rust guard enamel paint? Get a compressor and gun and go for broke? Powdercoat?

I can hear myself swearing already... lol

Re: CJ250T - Aussie Cafe Racer - First time Builder...

Okay, calm down mate. (I'm american so I use the term "mate" awkwardly) If you can afford Pro paint do it. Why waste the time?

If you want to have at it. Check out Twistedwheelz's thread "rattle can bling" He gives a pretty good tutorial about using those things.

I have a gun and compressor and am still thinking I will use rattle cans in the future on bike projects just because the results are so similar and the clean up is so much easier. Pro paint rocks! but you can get really good results on your own!

Oh, FYI in case you don't know, you can get whatever paints and colors you want loaded in to spray cans at most paint shops and better auto parts stores.

Re: CJ250T - Aussie Cafe Racer - First time Builder...

I'm calm...

Mate is a term that is well and truly used all the time here, so no awkwardness necessary!

I have had some interesting times with paint, but what the hell, lets do it!

I'll do some research and keep you fellas informed if I have a meltdown... ;) ;D

Re: CJ250T - Aussie Cafe Racer - First time Builder...

Paint is funny. it is its own thing. What I've learned, and I haven't been at it all that long is Prep, prep, prep and then prep some more. It takes patience :p Its taught me a lot about patience. uh, mate? :)

I can't say enough how much I like that seat. You nailed the lines on that.

Re: CJ250T - Aussie Cafe Racer - First time Builder...

Ok, so not much has been progressing of late, been busy with christmas celebrations and travelling etc etc. Been to Brisbane with work, been to Jindabyne to BUY A BIKE!

I have just finished an epic trip 8hrs from Newcastle to Thredbo, and then stayed the night there, and then 8hrs back. Ouch.

This bike is a beauty! Its a little 1977 CB125J, completely restored from the ground up by a lovely 77yo man, all original, I mean completely original even down to the tyres! Engine has had a rebuild too so the engine is tight as!

and.... only 1200bucks. Cheaper than a postie bike!

Rode it to work this morning... awesome little thing, runs like clockwork, rides smooth, just pure happiness in the form of 124cc...

Now the good bit. The photos!
