This has been so true for me it's ridiculous. I'll buy something that I see for $10 I have no use for at the moment, but 6 months later it is just what I need. :D
Here is a quick way to do a clean brushed look on aluminum you don't want to polish.
Give it a light sandblasting.
Use wax and a scotchbrite pad to rub it out.
The lighter one isn't rubbed out with wax yet.
Done.
I like Noxon 7 metal polish for making old chrome look decent. Waxing it afterward will slow the rust from returning.
For very rusty or peeling chrome I'll sandblast and paint. The chrome doesn't need to be completely removed if it isn't peeling or flaking, but just roughed up for paint...

The hub is the same. The difference is the rotor offset from between '76 and older 34mm forks with two piston calipers, and '77 and up with 35mm forks with single piston calipers.
