The earlier XS's had a compression release on the left hand exhaust. You pull a small lever on the handle bar, which pulls a cable, which pivots a lever against a small tab on the rocker arm, thus opening the left exhaust valve. The pivot point was in the valve check cover, which is why that...
Machinist - CNC programmer for large hydraulic cylinder components. I used to be a metallurgical machinist at an aerospace forge, but you can only make so many tensile tests before you go crazy!
I plan on doing 707racing full time before too long.
Re: Tim's XS project - ENGINE UPGRADES COMING :D - AUG 2012 SALT FLATS OR BUST
I'm pretty sure 1st gen R1 clutch plates will fit, but I don't know about springs. I might score some to try out.
Crazypj: I've got a cb350 that I've been trying to find time to dig into. I would like to machine...

60-70mph? I thought you guys used the metric system up there! Your bike should be geared to do 150mph @ 8000rpm, it sounds like. It depends on where you run out of HP fighting the atmosphere. My stock...
Re: Tim's XS project - ENGINE UPGRADES COMING :D - AUG 2012 SALT FLATS OR BUST
I'm stoked that the bike is alive and running! I can't wait to see what kind of numbers the motor is putting out. Remember, this thing should be good to 10k rpm!
Re: 1971 CB350 "Copperhead"
I have this identical bike sitting in my shop. I picked it up a few years ago, and still haven't started on it! I'm planning on putting a digital electronic magneto ignition in it. That will get rid of the battery, and any ignition problems. The only down side is...

I have an 01 SV650 front end on mine with a 'Busa steering damper. It works fine without bracing, but the forks aren't upside downers. Put some tapered rollers in there while you're at it.
I love my little KZ400! I've put a 440 motor in mine after going through a couple 400 motors. I made titanium valves for mine, which I put in everything. The weak point in the engine is that the counter-balancers rip out of the crank case at 14,000 rpm!
Re: Tim's XS project - ENGINE UPGRADES COMING :D - AUG 2012 SALT FLATS OR BUST
I think the intake velocity will be good. I ported/polished the intake ports to match up perfectly with the manifolds which I machined to match up to the VM34's. The intake should be a nice long smooth tube from...
